Nobody has ever figured out exactly what the El Camino is supposed
to be, and that is exactly why people love it. Part car, part
truck, all attitude. The 1972 model holds a special place in El
Camino history because it was the very last year of the Coke bottle
body style that debuted in 1968. After this, Chevy moved on to a
new look and the original shape was gone for good. This is the one
collectors want.
Under that cowl induction hood sits a 454 cubic inch V8 backed by a
three speed automatic. The cowl induction hood is one of the
coolest factory features of the era. When you hit full throttle, a
flap on top of the hood snaps open and feeds cooler outside air
directly into the engine. It is the kind of thing that makes people
turn around in a parking lot. The big block pulls hard and sounds
exactly the way a car like this should.
Inside, the black leather interior is clean and well kept. A wood
panel center console runs down the middle of the cabin and gives it
a more finished, upscale feel than you might expect from a truck.
SS rims, a Pioneer stereo, and all the right details round out a
car that looks as good inside as it does outside.
In 1972, the only way you could get the 454 engine in an El Camino
was to order the SS package. The 454 was exclusive to the SS trim,
which means if the engine is in the car, the SS badge is
legitimate. This is not a clone or a tribute. The factory assembly
instruction manual is still with the car in its original binder,
which is an incredibly rare thing to have after more than 50
years.
This is a genuine, documented SS 454 with the body style that
started it all, and they are not getting any easier to find.
