Few cars in history are as instantly recognizable as the wildly
unique and utilitarian El Camino. GM's original 'hybrid' combined
the best aspects of cars and trucks to create a vehicle unlike
almost anything else on the road. Taking that noticeability to
another level is this 1971 Chevrolet El Camino. Fully repainted in
a deep Jewel Red, SS-style grille, fitted rubber bed mat, along
with its polished American Racing wheels, signals to onlookers that
this is no ordinary cargo hauler, as it shows off this car's sleek
and unique lines.
Inside, we find a clean, stock-looking, restored black vinyl
interior. An expansive bench seat sits ahead of a four-spoke,
power-assisted steering wheel and a 120-mph horizontal speedometer,
while a set of aftermarket Bosch auxiliary gauges is mounted under
the dashboard just beneath the Vintage Air HVAC controls. While the
stock AM/FM stereo looks correct, it is actually a modern
retro-style unit that offers AM/FM/AUX inputs, allowing more music
options without interrupting the throwback vibe of this
interior.
Under the hood, we find a built 350-cubic-inch V-8 engine. A single
four-barrel Edelbrock carburetor feeds a Weiland intake mounted on
a set of lightweight Summit aluminum heads, while long-tube headers
and chambered dual exhaust allow this motor to breathe easily and
aggressively. That power is routed through a GM Turbo Hydra-Matic
TH350 three-speed automatic transmission before being sent out to a
10-bolt rear. Staggered 235/60R-15 front and 275/60R-15 rear Cooper
Cobra Radial G/T tires wrap those beautiful Torq Thrust wheels,
giving this car the perfect stance from any angle.
