This 1974 Buick Century Luxus definitely has no shortage of vintage
curb appeal. Its standout look combines the lengthy wheelbases and
long hoods so many coupes of its era had, with decidedly more
formal exterior styling than a number of its rivals. You just don't
see too many of its kind around anymore and there's a good reason
for that. Buick's Century model only got the Luxus treatment for
one model year and nearly all of the recipients of that treatment
have long since fallen by the wayside, so this sharp classic
represents a unique opportunity. When you factor in this Luxus's
appealing color that combines with clean exterior brightwork and
its robust big block power, that opportunity becomes even more
enticing.
The tan interior really presents well, with seating in both front
and back that shows only the slightest of wear, along with
carpeting, door panels and headliner that are equally fresh. The
front buckets straddle a center console that has been outfitted
with USB ports and houses a shifter from what is likely a later
model GM car, with a Grant steering wheel now perched on the tilt
column above. These aftermarket touches, along with upgraded LED
lighting, add a bit of customization to an interior that is
otherwise in very clean factory condition and, in fact, still
includes the original AM/FM/8-Track stereo at the center of the
dash.
Raise the hood and you'll see that this Buick's expansive engine
compartment has been put to good use, with a sizable 455-cubic-inch
V8 holding court at its center. The engine was rebuilt not that
many miles ago, with receipts on hand to back this up, and is fed
by a four-barrel Edelbrock carburetor perched on a stock intake
manifold. Tap on the gas pedal, and the big block will emit just
the right note out of the pair of Flowmaster mufflers that cap off
its dual exhaust. The accompanying 3-speed automatic TH400
transmission is also in solid working order, shifting through its
gears cleanly. Power steering makes this substantial cruiser easy
to maneuver, while power brakes that include discs up front provide
confidence-inspiring stopping ability. An upgraded aluminum fan is
now positioned up front to help keep operating temperatures under
control.
