With its prominent headlights and angular form, this 1964 Dodge
Dart GT looked very little like any of its competitors when it
debuted. But this vintage Mopar offering has a significance that
goes far beyond its distinctive appearance. You can make a pretty
good argument that this cruiser was an early adapter of the
"compact car with V8" engine formula that would lay the groundwork
for legions of muscle cars to follow. Dressed in deep blue paint
with a nice shine and metallic flake that really comes alive under
the sunlight, its contrasting black side trim adds to its singular
look, while its aggressively inclined stance showcases its 14"
American Racing alloy wheels to perfection.
The black vinyl interior has been thoroughly revitalized and, by
the pristine condition of the low-backed bucket seats, carpeting
and door panels, the work was done not long ago. Like the exterior
of the car, the dash area also has an appearance all its own,
positioning many of its control knobs vertically alongside the
instrument cluster. Among those controls is the pushbutton shifter
that navigates this classic through its gears. The factory gauges
are joined by some aftermarket displays mounted just below and a
tachometer is perched on the steering column to monitor RPMs during
more spirited driving. The original radio still holds its position
at the center of the dash, and an added Coldstream air conditioning
unit with integrated controls helps keep things comfortable inside
the cabin throughout the year.
The 273-cubic-inch V8 lurking below the hood was rebuilt recently,
so its best days are very much ahead. The engine is outfitted with
a Holley four-barrel carburetor to enhance its abilities, and it
pairs with a 3-speed automatic A727 Torqueflite transmission that
shifts through its gears with no issues and is operated by that
distinctive pushbutton inside the cabin. An added Champion aluminum
radiator with an electric pusher fan helps keep operating
temperatures under control and, with its dual exhaust system
terminating in a pair of aftermarket mufflers, this Dodge classic
sounds great. Its power steering system is functioning in top form,
so it's also easy to navigate, and its front disc brakes provide
fade-resistant stopping ability.
