Ford revived more than an American icon when it boldly resurrected
its unique Thunderbird sports/personal car for 2002. It also, as
events would have it, reprised an historic Motor Trend Car of the
Year win. "For 2002, we're happy to bestow that honor again,
recognizing today's Thunderbird for how it combines heritage with
modernity and pleasure with practicality.". Ford produced just over
68,000 of the "modern" Thunderbirds from 2002 to 2005.
For consignment, a 2005 Ford Thunderbird convertible with a title
verified 7,173 actual miles. Yes, like many of the modern
Thunderbirds that were purchased, it was used for pleasure rides
only and has remained in immaculate condition, presenting in what
has to be a nod to the 1957 Thunderbird Bronze Iridescent option.
Low mileage modern Thunderbirds sell quickly, so if you're
interested in this one, make like a falcon and dive in!
Exterior
The eye catching design of the front of this Bronze Metallic car
suggests 1950's Thunderbirds but in reverse angles. The headlights
lean backwards with no brow, where the originals pushed forward and
wore overhangs from the body. Our grille is slightly convex and
where the hood scoop rose above the hood in the '50's, it dips down
into the hood following a sculpted ravine that directs air to the
opening. The dramatic profile is bolstered by the 17-inch multi
spoke wheels wrapped in 50 series tires while the 50thanniversary
fender vent trim, broad polished windshield frame, and porthole
windows on the hardtop further enhance its visual excitement. In
the back, tail lights maintain a traditional round presentation and
still look like afterburners after all these years! The tan canvas
top with glass rear window is also in excellent shape and so is the
port holed auxiliary hardtop! Imperfections are limited to a scuff
on the passenger door handle, a slight scratch that intersects the
black pinstripe, and a rock chip in front.
Interior
Black door panels include a perforated panel and like the classic
Thunderbirds, carries the patterns onto the dash. The ribbed
pattern towards the door jamb also continues on a circular back
wall behind the seats and the bucket seats are covered in Light
Sand leather, well padded and topped by a substantial head rest
above. The center console houses a tan leather handled shifter sits
at the ready, racy and clean, while the tan wrapped steering wheel
has an aqua Thunderbird which is coordinated with the aqua needles
of the white faced gauges on the surrounding black dashboard. The
center stack contains the AM/FM/CD stereo, climate controls, and
other switches and knobs are fully integrated in the aluminum face
plate. Low pile black carpet covers the floor protected by fitted,
carpeted mats rimmed in tan and in great condition. The fully
finished trunk is also as clean as a whistle.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a clean and shrouded 3.9 DOHC V8, rated at 280
horsepower and mated to a 5-speed SelectShift automatic
transmission. Power is routed properly back to the rear axle with
3.58 gearing. Power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning
are standard.
Undercarriage
You know it's low mileage when there are grease pencil marks on the
chassis! Other than some minor road dirt, the underside is clean
and complete, with dual exhaust still carrying original equipment
muffler and exiting through chrome tips. Four wheel power disc
brakes are on board and suspension is independent at both ends with
Macpherson struts.
Drive-Ability
It's practically brand new but we note the tires are likely the
originals with a mid 2004 date code. But they still track well and
the car provides a smooth ride and comfortable cockpit. Naturally,
all functions in this garage kept bronze bird operate as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Call it anecdotal, but we're seeing interest in these sleeper
Thunderbirds increase, and prices on the low mileage garage queens
reflect the demand. There's really nothing quite like the modern
'birds on the road and they make great weekend cars that reliably
turn heads wherever they fly!
