This Alfa Romeo 1900 Spider Colli Tubolare Gilco is a faithful
recreation by Iconic Auto Sports, built to capture one of the most
obscure and intriguing one-off Alfa Romeos of the early 1950s.
The original car was a unique project, believed to have been
commissioned by Benvenuti of Naples and developed under the
direction of Fusi. It featured a lightweight tubular chassis by
Gilco (Colombo) a specialist known for advanced spaceframe designs
used by Ferrari and Maserati paired with hand-formed aluminum
bodywork by Carrozzeria Colli in Milan. Though often mistaken for a
Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 Disco Volante, it was in fact a separate
creation, with design cues especially at the front more closely
resembling the Alfa Romeo 6C 3000 RM.
Mechanically, the original car was assembled using a mix of Alfa
Romeo experimental components, including drivetrain and suspension
elements, and was completed around 1953. It was quickly sold to
Charles Rezzaghi, a well-connected racer and importer in the United
States, who campaigned the car in period, including an appearance
at the 1954 Guardsman Championship Races in San Francisco.
This example pays tribute to that lost one-off. Built on a tubular
chassis and finished with a fully hand-crafted aluminum body, the
recreation stays true to the spirit and proportions of the
original. It is powered by an Alfa Romeo 1750 engine, paired with a
4-speed manual gearbox, and features period-correct details such as
drum brakes, a 4-into-1 stainless exhaust, Veglia instrumentation,
and Rudge-style wire wheels. The interior is trimmed in burgundy
leather with red carpeting, while the exterior is finished in
classic Rosso Alfa Romeo.
Rather than attempting to replicate history exactly, Iconic Auto
Sports has created a driving interpretation of it-something that
captures the design, feel, and mechanical simplicity of a 1950s
Italian sports prototype, while offering usability and presence
today.
It's not just a recreation it's a revival of a car that very few
people have ever seen, and even fewer truly understand.
