The Figaro features a retro style design on both the interior and exterior, taking inspiration from cars of the 1950s as well as from elements of 1930s Art Deco design. Notable retro exterior design elements include the round headlights and taillights, chrome trim, fixed-profile convertible body style, and wheels designed to mimic whitewall tires. The Nissan Figaro made its debut at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show, unveiled with the slogan "Back to the Future." Its nostalgic design and modern reliability captivated the public, prompting Nissan to fast-track the car into production for the 1991 model year. Styled like a 1960s convertible, the Figaro featured a fixed-profile roof and was built on dependable contemporary underpinnings. Power came from a 987 cc MA10E-T turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, producing 76 horsepower and enabling a top speed of around 106 mph. This was paired with a three-speed automatic transaxle driving the front wheels. Nissan offered the Figaro in four pastel hues, each symbolizing a season: Lapis Grey for winter, Emerald Green for spring, Pale Aqua for summer, and Topaz Mist for autumn. All models were right-hand drive and came with up to 37 customizable options. Originally, only 8,000 units were planned, but overwhelming demand led Nissan to increase production to 20,000.
