With its distinctive, factory-correct Golden Tan paint shining
brightly and showing an overall level of functionality that would
be downright impressive for a car a decade or so newer, this 1982
Chrysler Imperial is an outlier in the best possible way. This
well-preserved relic from a much simpler time is a bona fide
looker. Not only is its paint in great shape, with a deep, even
shine, but its chrome bumpers and trim have come through the
decades looking strong, and those hideaway headlights, a defining
style element on many luxury cars during this era, are still
functional and sit nice and flush in their closed position. More
than 40 years after this Imperial rolled off the assembly, its body
panel alignment remains thoroughly intact, with doors, hood and
trunk that all shut with a reassuring "thud".
Climb inside, and you'll be immersed in a driving environment that
looks much as it did when this car was new. The power front
buckets, with their distinctive button pattern and plush padding,
have held up well, and the array of factory luxury options this
Chrysler began life with, including those power seats, as well as
power door locks, windows and mirrors, all function as intended.
The original AM/FM/Cassette stereo is standing by to offer its
period-correct audio experience.
This stylish cruiser features a smooth driving experience that's
very much in keeping with its sophisticated appearance. It's
powered by a factory-correct 5.2-liter V8. From the factory it came
with early and unreliable fuel injection. That concern has been
rectified and it is now equipped with a 2-barrel carburetor and is
running great, starting right up, idling smoothly and providing
solid acceleration. The engine pairs with a 3-speed automatic A904
transmission that shifts right on cue. An upgraded aluminum
radiator sits up front to help keep operating temperatures in check
and, with power steering and power brakes that include front discs,
this '80s Mopar classic is easy to navigate and bring to a stop as
it cruises on its set of factory-style 15" wheels wrapped with
Nexen tires that appear to have plenty of miles left on them.
