Reimel Motor Cars is proud to present this 1979 Ferrari 512 BB, a
striking and well-documented example of the car that reclaimed
Ferrari's performance throne in the 1970s. As the evolution of the
365 GT4 BB, the "Berlinetta Boxer" represents a pivotal era in
Maranello history, combining the raw power of a mid-mounted
5.0-liter flat-12 engine with the unmistakable wedge-profile
styling of Pininfarina.
History & Provenance
According to its documented history, Chassis 28297 was supplied new
by the renowned French importer Charles Pozzi in 1979. Originally
finished in a sophisticated palette of Silver over a Beige leather
interior, the car spent its earliest days in Europe before
undergoing a significant transformation.
In January 1980, with approximately 28,000 km on the odometer, the
car sustained minor rear-right damage. It was sent to Vaccari in
Italy for repair, at which time the owner elected to perform a
series of period-correct enhancements. During this stay in Italy,
the car was professionally refinished in the quintessential Rosso
Corsa over a Nero (Black) leather interior and fitted with its
distinctive BB LM-type wide-body wheel arches. These modifications
were fully documented and reported to Ferrari at the time, ensuring
the car's history remained transparent.
The car returned to the care of Pozzi in Paris through the
mid-1980s and was cherished by the same owner since 1989. The
accompanying records document a steady, extremely low mileage
progression, currently showing just over 50,600 km (approximately
31,440 miles).
Restoration & Condition
Currently presented in its striking "Le Mans" inspired
configuration, this 512 BB offers a unique blend of aggressive
aesthetics and meticulous long-term maintenance.
Exterior: The car features a purposeful, muscular stance thanks to
the period-installed LM-style arches and massive 345-series rear
wheels. The Rosso Corsa paint retains a deep shine, reflecting
years of careful climate-controlled storage.
*Equipment: The sale includes an original set of tools and a
remarkably deep history file containing extensive service records
and documentation dating back over three decades.
Recent & Notable Maintenance
Benefitting from a "regardless of cost" maintenance philosophy, the
included service file proves this 512 BB is a highly sorted,
road-ready machine:
Major Engine-Out Overhaul (2008/2009): A comprehensive mechanical
restoration was performed at 47,475 km, including engine removal,
carburetor rebuilds, suspension detailing, and an extensive list of
gaskets and seals.
Suspension Upgrade (2014): Fitted with new front and rear Koni
Classic Red shock absorbers for superior handling.
Drivetrain Refresh (2016): At 49,277 km, the transmission was
removed to install a complete dual-disc clutch assembly, alongside
a new pilot bearing and fresh fluids.
*Timing Belts & Brake Overhaul (2023): Heritage Motors Cars in
Paris performed a major service at 49,875 km. This included
replacement of the timing belts and tensioners, as well as a full
brake system rebuild featuring refurbished front and rear calipers,
new brake discs, new pads, and new flexible lines.
*Modern Drivability Sorting (2024): To ensure optimal touring
comfort, the car recently received a new clutch master cylinder.
The air conditioning system was also overhauled with a new A/C
switch and a complete Freon charge, while the electrical contacts
for the lighting were cleaned and verified.
Our Take
The 512 BB is widely regarded as the most desirable of the Boxer
series, offering the visceral soundtrack of carburetors with the
improved torque and drivability of the 5.0-liter engine. Chassis
28297 represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a
low-mileage, European-spec Boxer with incredible presence. It is a
Ferrari built for the enthusiast who appreciates a car with a
unique, competition-inspired history that still presents in
excellent "road-ready" condition.
