1972 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
Matching LS5 454 Big Block, 4-Speed, Positraction, Cold A/C, PS,PB
1972 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe finished in its factory color of Monza Red (code 974) over a black interior. This is a documented numbers-matching LS5 454ci big-block car paired with its original factory 4-speed manual transmission and Positraction rear end, power steering, power brakes and air conditioning representing the final year of chrome front and rear bumpers and one of the last high-compression big-block Corvettes of the muscle car era.
Factory stampings and castings have been reviewed, including the engine pad stamping and correct big-block casting numbers, along with transmission and rear differential components consistent with a numbers-matching example. These details support the car’s authenticity as a genuine LS5 big-block 4-speed Corvette.
This example benefits from 32 pages of recent service and restoration invoices totaling $36,384.75, with major mechanical work performed by well-regarded Corvette specialists at J & D Corvette. Since completion, the car has traveled just 1,424 miles and now shows 98,289 miles. The sale includes documented service records along with a clear California title.
An interesting part of this Corvette’s history includes prior ownership by well-known rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa, an artist with multiple #1 albums on the Billboard Blues Albums Chart. He acquired the car as a proper numbers-matching big-block example and commissioned mechanical work before ultimately gifting it to his father. The car was then relocated from Los Angeles to Sonoma, where it has been enjoyed sparingly for several years.
The factory 454 cubic-inch big block starts easily, idles smoothly, and delivers strong, linear power through the original 4-speed manual transmission. Extensive recent mechanical work was completed to ensure reliable drivability, including cylinder head rebuilding, camshaft and lifter replacement, gasket and seal service, and carburetor tuning. The cooling system has been refreshed with a new radiator, thermostat, hoses, and coolant service. Additional work includes differential service, clutch hydraulics service, brake system refresh with new front pads, resurfaced rotors, hoses, fluid flush, and system bleed. Steering and suspension were addressed with a new steering coupler and replacement control-arm and sway-bar bushings. A new starter was installed, and Flowmaster Super 44 mufflers were fitted. The result is a strong-running, well-sorted big-block Corvette with confident braking and solid road manners.
The exterior remains in its factory Monza Red and was refinished in an older, lower-budget respray. The paint presents as driver quality with age and imperfections consistent with an older repaint. The car retains its original exterior trim and chrome, which show visible wear throughout but remain complete. These elements present as driver quality and may benefit from reconditioning depending on the next owner’s standards. It rides on Corvette wheels fitted with BFGoodrich tires mounted and balanced during recent servicing. The wheel wells and inner fiberglass structure show consistent, unmodified characteristics at all four corners, with original bonding seams visible. The rear wells present cleaner, while the fronts show typical age-related undercoating and wear, all consistent with normal use and supporting an honest, unrestored structure.
The cockpit is trimmed in black and retains the classic driver-focused C3 layout, complete with factory gauges and a center console-mounted 4-speed shifter. The seating, dash pad, door panels, kick panels, and carpeting are all in good overall condition, showing only light, age-appropriate wear. Functionally, the interior is well sorted, featuring ice-cold air conditioning, working gauges, and a RetroSound Bluetooth audio system. The clock is currently inoperative.
This is an authentic, numbers-matching LS5 big-block 4-speed Corvette from the final chrome-bumper year, backed by verified drivetrain stampings and over $36,000 in recent mechanical investment. It presents as an honest, well-sorted driver that can be enjoyed immediately while offering clear upside for cosmetic refinement—an appealing combination for enthusiasts seeking a genuine big-block C3 without the premium of a fully restored example.
