Searching for a great example of early '70s style, with plenty of
big block power added to the mix? You need to look no further than
this 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Custom 454. With its lengthy hood,
sweeping rear roofline and aggressively inclined stance, this Chevy
is a rolling ambassador of that era. It's not only packing an
expansive V8, but also offers a level of factory correctness that's
truly hard to come by, starting with the Antique White paint it
still wears. Factor in its distinctive silhouette, well-fitted body
panel alignment and clean collection of chrome trim and you have
one attention-grabbing weekend cruiser.
Climb inside and you'll see that the black vinyl interior looks
very much as it did when this Monte Carlo first prowled the asphalt
more than half a century ago. The front buckets still have plenty
of life left in them, and they straddle a center console that
features a horseshoe shifter, one of Chevy's most coveted interior
elements at the time. Faux burlwood paneling isn't generally known
for its ability to withstand the test of time, but the examples
inside this cabin have. Take a closer look and you'll see that they
still have their original pigmentation and haven't lost any of the
detail they started with. At the center of the dash sits the
original AM/FM stereo with its 8-track still intact, although it
will need a bit of attention to get it back online.
Raise that lengthy hood and you'll find a substantial
454-cubic-inch V8 holding court in the center of the compartment.
In most cars, harboring an engine of this size would leave very
little room to perform even routine maintenance, but this Monte
Carlo accommodates it with ease, so things don't even look remotely
cluttered. The big block is equipped with a Holley four-barrel
carburetor, fires up on cue and pairs with a 3-speed automatic
TH400 transmission. Shorty headers sit in place of the original
manifolds to reduce backpressure, and a dual exhaust that includes
a pair of Flowmaster mufflers adds just the right deep note. Power
brakes that feature discs in front bring this Chevy's 15" Rally
wheels to a stop in a hurry, while power steering makes for easy
navigation.
