Building upon the tremendous success of the 997-generation 911, Porsche released the sensational 991-generation 911 in 2012. The final series of naturally aspirated standard 911s, the 991 introduced a new platform offering increased stability and structural rigidity over its predecessor along with distintive new styling. As had been the case from the transition from the 996 to the 997, the 991's interior was once again dramatically updated with an even greater focus on luxury. Of course, performance was improved as well, with updated suspension tuning and improved motors.
Also new for the 991 was the return of the traditional Targa styling. As Porsche enthusiasts will know, Porsche moved away from a removable roof panel for the 993-generation Targa, instead utilizing a power panoramic sunroof. While convenient for owners, the change polarized purists and was continued through the 996- and 997-generations. For the 991, the instantantly recognizable Targa roll bar was back along with a cloth roof panel. However, in a show of Porsche's incredible technical expertise, the panel was no longer manually removable but instead fully power operated, with the whole rear window assembly electrically moved away to allow for the top's storage. Only available in all wheel drive, the 991 Targa offers an intriguing middle ground between coupe and cabriolet body styles.
