The Package Kar was a small three-wheeled utility/delivery vehicle
that was built by the Cushman Scooter Company in the post-WWII era.
Cushman converted their classic scooter design into a utilitarian
vehicle for civilian/commercial use. Package Kars were primarily
used for deliveries, ice-cream vending and small cargo hauling.
Cushman Model 59 Ice Cream Scooter-
This Package Kar is an outstanding example of the 1947 Cushman
Model 59 Ice Cream Scooter. It has been fully restored and is most
likely better than new. Features include an insulated cargo box,
ice cream vendor bells, change dispenser, dual headlights and
front/rear bumper. A hinged vinyl seat flips forward to access the
engine and a rear hatch opens to the fuel tank/filler cap.
Floorboard foot controls consist of clutch, brake, and accelerator
pedals. The owner has also included a vendor cap, a dozen
traditional 'soda-jerk' paper hats and a yellow shade umbrella.
Automotive Design Concepts-
Power is furnished by a 4-cycle air-cooled 'Cushman Husky' flathead
single-cylinder engine. A hand-shifted two-speed manual
transmission with reverse transfers torque to the single rear wheel
via a primary drive chain. The front suspension employs a double
wishbone/spring shock design and incorporates an automotive-style
steering assembly. A pair of coil springs are used in the rear and
braking is handed by mechanical drum units. The front axles utilize
6" steel wheels and a Cushman scooter wheel/tire is used in the
rear.
This Cushman Model 59 Ice cream Scooter is a very handsome piece of
our history. Note: This rare vehicle is offered with a current
South Carolina title.
