This beautiful rare 1979 Volkswagen Type 2 (T2) Westfalia Camper is
a completely restored vehicle. The second owner took it off road in
1998 and it was garaged until the third owner
purchased it in 2013. It sat idle in a garage awaiting restoration
until 2016 when the third
owner embarked on a 6-year project that included and estimated
2,000+ labor hours and over
$26,000 in parts and materials. Resulting in a thorough and
professional, mechanical, body and
interior restoration.
Vehicle details
The 1979 VW Transporter (T2) was the last of the VW bay window
buses built for the US
market. It is considered by many to be the most dependable and
refined of the bay window
buses. The Westfalia campers like this one are versatile enough for
everyday driving, weekend
trips to the beach or even for some camping or road trip across
America.
This 1979 Westfalia is thought to have just over 88k original miles
on the original rebuilt engine,
but there is not a complete set of documents to substantiate. The
second owner supposedly
bought it from the original owner in 1993 with 67,508 miles on it.
The bus was parked and
placed in storage in 1998 with the 86,300 miles showing when the
third owner purchased it in
2013.
The bus was completely disassembled and taken down to the bare
metal. Only rust found was
in front dog legs, a small area under taillight and a battery tray.
These areas were removed and
new metal put in place. Also, the front door skins were replaced
due to some rust in lower part
of the doors. The vehicle was repainted in the original Sage green
using top of the line Ppg paint
and Southern Urethane Show clear.
On the interior, all seats were disassembled, inspected and put
back together with new seat
foam and upholstery front and back. Sound deadening and insulation
were placed in walls and
floors. A new headliner was installed front and back. New carpet
and original style front mat
installed along with new pedestal mats were added.
