Thanks to emissions rules and tighter regulations, America received
a carbureted version of Britain's TR5 with considerably less
horsepower. The good news is, we still got a great little car with
a lot of appeal and charm and enough power to have fun. The TR250
is the American version and with less than 9,000 produced in 1968
for the U.S. market, it's a relatively rare car. That encourages
clubs and those that share the interest around the country in
actively participating in meets, rallies, regular meetings, and
tech sessions.
For consignment, a 1968 Triumph TR250 roadster with a title
verified 25,510 actual miles. This car has been garaged its whole
life according to our consignor who purchased it from a San
Francisco collection. Included with the sale is a new in box Surrey
top.
Exterior
It's a fantastic shade of dark blue, here as two stage Valencia
Blue and this car has the silver nose stripe that lends contrast
and an appropriate bit of sportiness. The chrome bumpers are in
good condition and we love how the rear bumper wraps around the
entire stretch of the rear quarter panels, while the TR250 emblems
are immaculate. Our grille, door handles and brightwork overall is
in show quality condition and the 15-inch chrome wire wheels wear
205/70R15 tires with a mid 2021 date code. The black canvas
convertible top is in near flawless condition and the three rear
plastic windows are clear. Imperfections include an area of orange
peel, scuffs in the clear, chips, an area of under paint, a
spattering of bubbles on the front quarter and door, and right rear
quarter panel, and chips on the lower air dam.
Interior
Black door panels are neat and clean and open up to bucket seats
covered in black leather that are also accented by white piping and
stitched inserts, while the rear fender covers are dressed to match
with the piping. The three spoke steering wheel is wood and steel
and leads to a beautifully stained and shellacked wood dashboard.
The speedometer and tachometer are large and simple while a cluster
of four small gauges sit in the center of the dash and the glove
box fits like a puzzle piece to the right. A pod of square control
knobs is under the cluster and the ignition is there as well. The
wood handled shifter is floor mounted in a molded plastic shroud
and the parking brake is perched on the center hump between the
seats. The rear shelf behind the seats is carpeted and our trunk
holds the spare tire and a shelf, uncovered.
Drivetrain
Under the hood you'll find a 2.5 liter inline six cylinder rated at
106 horsepower and fueled by a pair of Su carburetors. It's mated
to a 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive and power is routed
to the rear axle through 3.70 gears.
Undercarriage
We find clean conditions underneath where the single exhaust system
carries a stock style muffler and emits twin tail pipes out back.
Power brakes are on board as front disc and rear drum and
suspension consists of coil springs in front and independent
trailing arms and coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
The square body Triumphs are some of our favorites, providing a
good, balanced ride and feeling a lot faster than it is due to its
spry handling and low center of gravity. This one is consistent
with a low mileage, well maintained example and all functions on
board operate as they should. You'll find this one in our British
room! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This generation of TR's remains popular and by a large margin, sell
quicker than most here at the mall. If you are interested, we
encourage you to skip the fish and chips and pick up the phone!
This is a sharp little British roadster that comes with a hardtop
as icing on the cake!
