"You know how kids swipe your socks. Well, the same thing is
happening to our new Ford. I haven't been able to get my hands on
it since I drove it home - somebody in the family always gets there
first! But you can't blame them. That car with that 100 horsepower
V8 engine is as much fun as a hole in one." From the typically
whimsy 1948 print ad series.
For consignment, a 1948 Ford Deluxe coupe showing 9.493 miles, but
the true miles are unknown due to a title exemption. The car now
features a 302ci V8 under the hood and a paint job and interior
they could only dream about in 1948!
Exterior
Fantastic rounded edges of the Ford's profile are accentuated by
the two stage Medium Blue paint here and that paint is accentuated
itself by a white and yellow stripe down the side and V8 graphic on
the hood. A bit of chrome offsets the blue and is found on the
bumpers, tailpipes, grille, spot lights, and 15-inch SSC wheels.
The car hunkers down over the tall sidewall tires, especially in
the back where the flared fenders hug the entire top of the rubber.
Tail lights look positively diminutive amongst the big, rounded
decklid while stand alone headlights cap a flat topped fender
flanking a rising hood. Imperfections in the paint include chips,
dents, scuffs, and scratches throughout, and some blistering.
Interior
Tan door panels are embossed with a design, show a touch of age,
and lead to bucket seats obviously borrowed from a later model car,
now with Ford embroidered in blue on the headrests with tan vinyl
framing crushed velour. The rear seats match and include a center
armrest. Up front, an A1C steering wheel shows some patina and
leads to a fantastic dash in body blue and polished metal along
with VDO vintage style gauges for a nice mix of old and new. A
custom center console is home to an AM/FM/CD radio and
ashtray/cigarette lighter combo along with a hand crafted
switchgear panel for electric windows. Tan carpet below, a clean
headliner above, and a trunk finished with carpet and vinyl
complete the interior tour.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 302ci V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor and mated
to a 4-speed Ford AOD automatic transmission which sends the power
to the 9" in back with 3.22 gears. The car has A/C, power brakes,
and power steering and runs on a 12 volt system.
Undercarriage
Standard and relatively clean underneath with minimal surface rust,
no leaks detected, and one spot of rust on a body brace. Dual
exhaust runs through Cherrybomb mufflers on their way to a chrome
tipped exit and power brakes are employed as front disc and rear
drums. Our Deluxe has a Mustang II front end and leaf springs in
back.
Drive-Ability
We go from the exterior 40's to more like the 80's on the inside
and it all works together pretty well, as we fire up the dependable
302 and head out onto the test loop where the car provides a solid
ride with straight tracking and decent power. We note the brake
lights and horn are not working and while the radio turns on, we're
not getting sound. All other functions operate as they should and
the Cherrybombs provide a pretty nice soundtrack of their own!
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Some old school street rodding here and it's the right combo of
vintage styling, mid century engineering, and modern additions. Its
striking shape and color is going to turn some heads while the
comfortable interior envelopes occupants for a fun experience,
inside and out!
