For Sale: 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1988 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 Convertible

"While the Cavalier's popularity remains high, Chevrolet also recognized the need to provide a sporty version to make it more appealing to younger buyers; hence the Z24 coupe and the Z24 convertible. Coming into its third year, the Z24 model has been refined for even greater buyer appeal. Indeed, the whole Cavalier line has been enhanced with aerodynamic styling revisions and some basic powertrain refinements that boost its appeal both visually and functionally. The car has been treated to a sleeker appearance that is more in keeping with its performance intent." Car and Driver, June 1988

For consignment, a 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 convertible with a title verified 109,203 actual miles. The mid 80's saw the popularity of convertibles return with nearly every manufacturer offering their version by the early 90's.

Exterior
Two tone was also popular, especially at Chevrolet where performance models with body cladding were often subjected to a treatment of silver or gray to contrast with the body color, in this case black. Chevrolet was also not shy about using red plastic call outs evident here on the decklid, Z24 on the dogleg, and of course, the bowtie in front. Speaking of the front, Chevrolet adds some aggression the hood with a pair of power bulges, but no too aggressive while the rear deck sports a luggage rack for long distance adventures, but it's the unique, geometric wheels that set this car apart and make it iconically 80's and if you've ever wondered what a square peg in a round hole would look like, look no further than the 14-inch refinished wheels that wear tires with a late 2023 date code. Imperfections here include rock chips on the front, a ding and touched up chip on the right fender, ding and scratch on the door, and typical chin scrapes. The black canvas top and plastic window are in great shape.

Interior
It wouldn't be 80's without velour and that begins on the door panels, in gray, over a carpeted lower panel, showing a touch of age but intact and featuring plastic switchgear. The bucket seats also take on two shades of gray with a striped pattern in the center and dark gray piping around the front buckets and rear seats, all showing without rips and very little wear. A two spoke steering wheel opens to a digital dash, space age in the 80's, with bar graphs showing progressive quantifiers and colorful indicator lights in black, horizontal panels. The A/C panel matches the Delco AM/FM/Cassette radio in the center stack while a later model Alpine CD deck resides below it. The plastic center console houses the shifter and shows some wear, nothing a little interior paint couldn't remedy. Gray carpet below is protected by Z24 mats and the trunk is clean and houses an amplifier.

Drivetrain
Under the hood, a driver quality 2.8 liter V6, rated at 126 horsepower and fuel injected. A THM125 3-speed automatic transmission backs it up and keeps power up front with 3.18 gearing.

Undercarriage
Clean conditions are found underneath with a touch of the typical oxidation and surface rust you would expect. Power brakes are distributed as front disc and rear drum and the single exhaust system carries a stock style muffler on its way to a polished exit out back where the rear cladding contours to the tip. Suspension consists of Macpherson struts up front and coil springs in back.

Drive-Ability
The styling is matched by the nostalgia you feel when sitting in the driver's seat and depending on your age, the familiar dash reminds you of high school, college, or your first car! The V6 runs smoothly and the car tracks straight on the newer tires and the car has been well cared for and as a result, all functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
