Based in Pfaffenhausen, Germany, RUF began life as a service garage in 1939 and later expanded into a full-service fuel station in 1949. After building his own tour bus in 1955, Alois Ruf Sr. opened a separate bus company and, in 1960, his son began specializing in servicing Porsche vehicles. By 1975, a year after his father's death, Alois Ruf Jr. produced his first RUF-enhanced Porsche. Things quickly escalated from there. Their first complete model based on the 930 was released in 1977 and a naturally aspirated car in 1978.
Soon, RUF became the only fully licensed manufacturer in Germany to be provided bodies-in-white from Porsche to build their tuned vehicles - designated with unique VINs beginning with 'W09'. In 2000, RUF began production of the RGT, based on the 996.1 911 GT3. Only seventeen such cars were built, each with 385hp (versus the GT3's 360hp) and a stiffened chassis with RUF's specially designed hidden internal roll cage. Special RUF-exclusive high-downforce bodywork including a new front bumper and unique rear decklid create a visual distinction between it and a standard 911 GT3. Naturally, such enhancements provide for increased performance and exceptional handling prowess, making the RGT the perfect choice for driving enthusiasts.

For those less familiar with RUF Automobile, the company earned official German manufacturer status in 1981. Since then, RUF has crafted its legendary vehicles in-house at its Pfaffenhausen facility. The W09 VIN designation marks these as among the rarest and most prestigious Porsche-based cars ever produced—fully custom-built, high-performance masterpieces. RUF remains the only tuner Porsche trusts to issue its own VINs and to purchase brand-new, unpainted bodies directly from Porsche for transformation into limited-edition supercars.
This 2001 RUF RGT is a two-owner example and one of just **17 produced worldwide**—an authentic W09 model that began life as a Porsche body-in-white shipped straight to RUF for conversion into a full factory RUF, not a later modification of an existing Porsche (WP0 VIN) car. It represents RUF's elevated take on the 996 GT3, delivering superior performance and refinement.
RUF enhanced the 3.6-liter Mezger flat-six engine (derived from the GT3) to produce **385 hp** (up from the GT3's 360 hp) while boosting low-end torque for sharper, more tractable response across the rev range. A lighter clutch and flywheel allow quicker revs and heightened agility, yet the ECU calibration ensures smooth, effortless drivability—even in traffic with air conditioning engaged.
