The 2017 Corvette Grand Sport Collector Edition Coupe was
introduced by Chevrolet as a special version of the C7 Grand Sport
to celebrate the return of the historic Grand Sport nameplate,
which originally began with the legendary race cars engineered by
Zora Arkus-Duntov in 1963. Those original Grand Sports were
lightweight racing Corvettes built to compete internationally
against cars like the Cobra, but only five were ever produced
before General Motors halted factory racing. Because of that
history, the Grand Sport badge has always represented a Corvette
focused on track capability and performance without forced
induction. The 2017 model revived that heritage by combining the
wide-body chassis and suspension from the Z06 with the naturally
aspirated LT1 V8 from the Stingray, producing 460 horsepower while
delivering exceptional balance and reliability on both the street
and the track.
The Collector Edition package (RPO Z25) was created as a limited
commemorative version of the Grand Sport and came exclusively in
Watkins Glen Gray Metallic with distinctive Tension Blue racing
stripes and hash marks inspired by the original 1963 Grand Sport
race cars. Inside, the car featured a unique Tension Blue leather
and suede interior, special seat embroidery of the historic Grand
Sport logo, blue stitching, and a serialized dashboard plaque
identifying each car as part of the limited production run.
Chevrolet produced approximately 935 Collector Edition cars
worldwide, making it one of the lower-production variants of the C7
generation and instantly recognizable because of its unique color
and trim combination.
The car is considered collectible for several reasons. First, it
represents one of the most balanced performance combinations of the
C7 generation, pairing the Z06's aggressive chassis with a
naturally aspirated engine that avoids the heat issues sometimes
associated with the supercharged Z06. Second, it carries direct
historical ties to the original 1963 Grand Sport racing program,
which remains one of the most important chapters in Corvette
history. Finally, the C7 generation itself is significant because
it is the last front-engine Corvette platform before the transition
to the mid-engine design introduced with the Chevrolet Corvette C8,
giving limited editions like the 2017 Grand Sport Collector Edition
a strong place in modern Corvette collecting.
