Taken from the army and made for the masses, few trucks can compare
with the iconic status of the Civilian Jeep (CJ) series of one of
America's favorite vehicles. This 1981 Jeep CJ7 4X4 comes decked
out in a full orange repaint, complete with matching hard-shell
doors. Add to that a full-sized, rear-mounted spare with a package
tray above, adding a little extra practicality. Black steel
bumpers, along with black fenders and trim, give this CJ even more
charisma than these trucks naturally have. Keep its removable hard
top on, and you're ready to take on any weather conditions that
come your way. Or, take the top off and enjoy the fun and leisurely
side of this off-roading warrior.
Inside, this CJ retains its relatively no-frills, militaristic
personality, albeit with a strikingly fun body-color dashboard and
door frames. A locking center console separates a pair of comfy,
newly recovered, supportive bucket seats. A power-assisted
three-spoke wheel sits ahead of an offset factory-style gauge
cluster, featuring a big 85 mph speedometer flanked by a pair of
auxiliary gauges measuring volts, engine temperature, and oil
pressure. Block off plates for HVAC controls and stereo make it
easy to keep your eyes on the road through the upright, fold-down
windshield. A powder-coated expletive bar gives the front passenger
something to grab onto when the road disappears and their center of
gravity shifts outside their comfort zone.
Under the hood, we find a 258-cubic-inch inline-six-cylinder engine
fed by a one-barrel carburetor. That power is funneled through a
tried-and-true four-speed manual transmission, on its way to either
the rear wheels or to all four corners via a pair of Dana axles.
Engage the manually locking front hubs, shift into four-wheel high
or four-wheel low, and prepare for maximum traction.
