This 1929 Mercedes-Benz Gazelle (titled as a 1929 Mercedes-Benz SSK
PEPL Convertible) captures the unmistakable styling of one of the
most iconic sports cars of the pre-war era. Inspired by the
legendary Mercedes-Benz SSK roadsters of the late 1920s and early
1930s, Gazelle replicas were produced primarily during the 1970s
and 1980s as kit cars designed to bring the elegant look of these
historic European performance cars to enthusiasts at a more
approachable cost. Featuring sweeping fenders, an upright grille,
external exhaust styling, and classic roadster proportions, the
Gazelle delivers the visual drama of a vintage grand touring
car.
Gazelle kits were typically constructed with fiberglass bodies
mounted over modern, serviceable mechanical components, allowing
owners to enjoy classic styling without the expense and complexity
of maintaining an original pre-war luxury automobile. Many examples
were built using readily available donor drivetrains from vehicles
such as the Ford Pinto, Chevrolet Chevette, or Volkswagen Beetle,
making them simple to maintain and easy to source parts for.
This particular example is powered by a Ford Pinto-based drivetrain
paired with a 4-speed manual transmission, sending power to the
rear wheels through 3.08 gearing. The combination of lightweight
construction and a straightforward rear-wheel-drive setup makes the
car enjoyable and approachable to drive, while still delivering the
nostalgic open-air motoring experience these cars are known
for.
The current owner has cared for this Gazelle since 1996, showing
nearly three decades of long-term ownership. The car is well
equipped with several accessories including a convertible soft top,
clip-on side windows, a cockpit/cabin cover, and a full car cover,
providing flexibility whether the car is being driven, displayed at
shows, or stored.
With its distinctive 1920s styling, simple mechanical components,
and engaging open-top driving experience, this Gazelle offers a fun
and eye-catching way to enjoy the spirit of classic European
motoring. It is an excellent option for someone looking for a
unique vintage-style cruiser that stands out wherever it goes.
