"The 1954 model year was big for Cadillac, starting with a redesign
of the basic Series 62 model. The new Caddy was lower, sleeker, and
featured exhaust tips that exited through upswept bumper
extensions. For 1956, the Series 62 received a facelift, further
accentuating its long, flowing lines, and added the Eldorado Coupe
Seville in a 2 door hardtop configuration, and the Sedan De Ville
became Cadillac's first ever 4 door hardtop." Thx Hagerty.com
For consignment, a 1956 Cadillac Series 62 coupe showing 64,418 on
the odometer, but the true miles are unknown. This car presents in
barn find condition and the engine runs on an auxiliary fuel
source, but the car has no brakes.
Exterior
Easily one of Cadillac's most iconic designs, the 62 is long and
low and is capped off with headlights on top of emerging fins in
back and it's not hard to see both Harvey Earl's and Bill
Mitchell's influence on the design. It's also not hard to imagine
this barn find in its heyday, its Maroon paint gleaming brightly,
outshined only by the massive chrome of the bumpers. It's all faded
now, full of patina as well as several rust holes, although the
original Dagmar bumpers still hint at the car's former glory. The
headlight bezel accenting and the torpedo-like humanoid as the hood
ornament are unmistakable, even in their pitted condition. Trim is
missing as are two wheel covers and some are now found in the
trunk. A good amount of surface rust prevails on the body to
accompany remnant, weathered paint.
Interior
Door panels are also relegated to the trunk and do show some age,
while the white leather and black cloth inserts of the front split
bench and rear bench are mostly intact but just very dirty in
addition to some splitting seams. The ivory rim of the steering
wheel has more cracks than Humpty Dumpty, and it fronts a weathered
dash that's dusty, but mostly intact with the covering of the dash
pad ready to give up the ghost. The painted lower dash is colored
by surface rust and the floor is covered with a rubber mat. Up top,
the headliner is barely hanging on and the visors are hoping for a
better companion. Our trunk is full of parts including trim, fender
skirts, wheel covers, and door panels.
Drivetrain
We lift the hood to find a good amount of rust on the underside of
the hood itself, revealing a barn find condition powerplant, here a
364ci V8 rated at 285 horsepower and topped by a 4-barrel
carburetor. It's backed by a Hydramatic 4-speed automatic
transmission with power being sent to 3.07 gears in the rear axle.
This car was originally equipped with power steering.
Undercarriage
We were encouraged by our first look from afar, of the underside,
but once underneath, patches of invasive rust, especially on inner
rockers, can be found throughout. The dual exhaust travels through
glasspack style mufflers as it continues to the rear bumper exit.
Drum brakes are on all four wheels and suspension consists of coil
springs in front and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
The engine runs on an auxiliary gas source and goes into gear, but
the car has no brakes.
It's a project, but perhaps one worthy of your time and effort as
it represents an iconic American car with design cues that would
live on in future generations. It's the Cadillac of Cadillacs!
