1968 Mercury Cougar for sale. Finished in red over a black interior and powered by a replacement 302ci V8 paired with a C4 three-speed automatic transmission. The car retains classic Cougar styling cues including hideaway headlights and sequential rear turn signals. According to the previous owner, the car was refurbished prior to his purchase in 2008, after which it was stored for roughly ten years before being refreshed again around 2020 when the replacement engine and rebuilt transmission were installed. The current owner acquired the car in August 2021 showing approximately 80k miles on the odometer. Service records from recent ownership totaling just over $3,000 will accompany the sale along with several spare interior and trim pieces including a chrome Grant steering wheel, a new armrest, window winders, miscellaneous trim items, and a clear California title.
Power comes from a replacement 302ci V8 that reportedly received machine work prior to installation including cylinders bored .030 over, rebuilt cylinder heads, and a Comp Cams roller camshaft and lifters. Additional components include a Holley air cleaner and Weiand finned valve covers. The engine starts easily, runs smoothly, and idles well. The C4 automatic transmission shifts cleanly and the car drives nicely with good braking and suspension feel. Since 2021 the owner has completed several service items including installation of a new exhaust system (catalytic converter, muffler, and tailpipe), carburetor service and replacement, fuel line replacement, cooling system service including thermostat housing gasket and coolant, oil service, hose and wiring routing corrections, and installation of a PCV valve. Additional work performed in 2023 included transmission service with new pan gasket and fluid, replacement of the left and right rear axle seals and axle bearing retainers, differential fluid service, rear brake hose replacement, and brake fluid service.
The car is finished in red and presents well overall. Exterior features include hideaway headlights and sequential rear turn signals. The car rides on styled 14" steel wheels with polished GT center caps wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires sized 225/70R14. The tires should be replaced soon and the car has been priced accordingly as many buyers prefer selecting their own brand and style. Exterior trim and glass present well overall consistent with a driver-quality classic.
The interior is finished in black and features a mix of newer and original components. The headliner and carpeting have been replaced and present nicely, while the door panels and kick panels appear original. The seat upholstery may also be original although that cannot be confirmed. A RetroSound stereo provides Bluetooth and auxiliary input while maintaining a period-correct appearance. The car is equipped with an aftermarket steering wheel which eliminates the horn function and automatic turn signal cancel feature. The wipers, gauges, and interior lighting function properly. The driver’s remote mirror adjuster is broken and must be adjusted manually, and the passenger-side vent window handle is missing. The trunk area is tidy with a reproduction rubber mat, smaller spare tire with cover, and neatly installed audio components including speakers and crossovers.
