For Sale: 1951 Allard J2 in Cave Creek, Arizona

Vehicle Description

1951 Allard J2   #99J1739 was delivered to its first owner, Fred Nemith of New York in September 1951.  The color was red with red interior.  The car was shipped from England without an engine or transmission as all Allards shipped to the US came that way.  Fred had the Cadillac V8 331 installed.  He raced in Hillclimbs until he sold it in November 1952.  I have a complete list of all the owners of this car since new.  The 4th owner, Thomas Unkrich, an engineering student, bought the car in 1958.  He decided to install a Buick nailhead for more power, with 4 chrome pipes coming out of each side (see photo).  He sold it in 1960.  To the best of my knowledge the car was raced in this configuration until the early 90's.  The history is sketchy, but at some point the Buick engine was removed and the Cadillac 331 was again installed.  The 8th owner, Paul Burt did a restoration in 2010.  In 2019 the car had a complete body off restoration by Redline Restorations in Bridgeport, Ct. (see photos).  This Allard is one of about 90 built.  Carroll Shelby raced both the Allard J2 and the J2X early in his racing career.  This Allard features and alloy body,  De Dion rear suspension and front swing axle.  It has 4 wheel brakes with Alfin drums.  The Cadillac V8 331 has 390 heads for better breathing, 3 Stromberg carburetors, MSD ignition and custom headers with side exhaust.  The engine has a vintage Weiand intake manifold and rare vintage Hildebrandt valve covers.  The engine is coupled with a Richmond Super T-10 4 speed transmission.  The roll bar is removable and has painted plugs for the holes.  Tires are Dunlop racing tires.  The dark blue paint is gorgeous and the red leather interior is in perfect condition, still soft and supple.  The car has a custom made gas tank to allow the spare tire to ride under the rear cover.  This car was raced by most of its owners until 2013 or so.  Items to note:  rear main leaks oil,  speedometer works fine but reads lower than actual speed and fuel gauge not accurate.  Recent service includes a new water pump, new hydraulic clutch master cylinder and new hydraulic throw out bearing.  I have 2 binders full of receipts, photos and documentation.  Also included is a high quality felt lined car cover.
