1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible

Offered for sale is this nicely preserved 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible, a California car since new with a short list of long-term owners. Finished in its original Phoenix Red (L32K) and showing what we believe to be 75,556 original miles on the odometer, it remains a very attractive example of Volkswagen’s classic open-top Beetle. Originally delivered on December 14, 1973 by Peninsula Volkswagen of San Mateo, California, the car has spent its life in Northern California. Included with the car are the original owner’s manual, dealer service booklet with stamps from Peninsula Volkswagen, and a small collection of historical registration and service records.
Power comes from what appears to be the car’s original low-mileage 1600cc dual-port air-cooled flat-four engine, which starts easily, idles smoothly, and runs with plenty of power and pull. The 4-speed manual transmission shifts easily through all the gears, while the braking, suspension, and steering feel tight and responsive, making the car fun and easy to drive. After bringing the car out of a roughly 10-year hiatus in storage, we performed a recommissioning to ensure reliable road use. The fuel system was cleaned, a new battery was installed, and the engine was serviced with fresh oil and filter. The braking system was refreshed with new brake hoses, fresh fluid, and a full bleed, with the brakes showing approximately 70% life remaining in the front and about 50% in the rear. The front ball joints were also replaced, and the car was fitted with a new set of tires, helping the Beetle drive nicely on the road and inspiring confidence in its next owner knowing it has been made road-ready for summer fun.
The exterior presents nicely with typical age and light patina consistent with a well-preserved classic. The convertible top still retains the glass rear window, appears to have been replaced at some point, looks excellent, operates smoothly, and seals up nicely. The car was repainted in its original Phoenix Red (L32K) by a previous owner and retains a deep shine today. The finish shows a few minor flaws here and there as expected with an older repaint, but overall it presents very well. The car sits on a new set of 165/80 R15s tires mounted on attractive upgraded chrome-finished Volkswagen wheels fitted with traditional VW hubcaps. All systems and lighting are in good working order. Underneath, the car presents well with nice floors, solid dog legs, and good structural integrity throughout. The underside reflects a solid Northern California car with clean infrastructure all around. Overall, it’s a very appealing Beetle that gets smiles and positive attention everywhere I take it.
The interior is comfortable, complete, and tidy. The upholstery, door panels, and headliner are all in excellent condition, while the gauges remain crisp and clear— even the clock still works. At some point a dash cover was installed, which remains in place, and we recently installed a new set of carpet to freshen up the cabin. For added convenience, a modern stereo with Bluetooth capability has been installed. All of the seat belts are present, and the cabin is a comfortable place to spend time, making this Beetle a fun and easy car to cruise around in.
With its attractive presentation, California history, and recent recommissioning after a decade in storage, this Super Beetle Convertible is ready to be enjoyed again.
