was most likely previously decked by a machine shop during a
rebuild and the engine assembly date and suffix codes were removed
by the machining process and therefore we are unable to confirm
with any certainty if this engine is original to the car or not,
although as stated, it is indeed a date correct big block 396 V8
3969854 casting number for this period and year. The trim tag or
data plate is also correctly riveted on the top of the cowl on the
drivers side. Also please note that 1970 was the first year that
the Super Sport became an option within the Malibu line, instead of
being a stand alone model, with the importance of documentation,
such as a copy of the factory build sheet or a window sticker, to
be considered essential to absolutely proving authenticity; and
therefore as no such documentation exists for this particular
example it should be considered a beautifully restored Malibu
clone! In 1970, Chevrolet introduced the ultimate powerhouse for
its midsize muscle car, the LS-6 and it was voted the best muscle
car of all by Car and Driver. It was also the year GM lifted its
displacement ban on all its midsize muscle cars. Today, it is
regarded as one of the most fearsome muscle cars of all time. GM
built the car to show up Ford and Mopar and the all out performance
of the LS-6 454 had the competition shuddering. The all-out
performance engine of 1970 had a factory rating of 450 bhp and no
other muscle car production engine had a higher rating. By 1972,
the last year of these desirable models, the bhp had dropped to 270
bhp.As 'Road Test' magazine correctly stated, "The SS package made
the Chevelle worthy of notice by any serious motorist and permits
the available power to be utilized with safe handling and braking".
Correct SS options include round dash gauges, F41 suspension, front
disc brakes, rear bumper pad, bright engine accents, dual exhausts
with bright tips, black accented grille, wheel opening moldings,
special domed hood, special chassis features including SS emblems
on the grille, fenders, rear bumper, 17x7 Rally Wheels with raised
white letter tires, steering wheel and door trim. The 1970 Chevelle
SS combined Chevrolets largest engines with its midsize car to give
outrageous results. The squarer lines gave SS Chevelles the stance
of a street tough. The car's original factory color 'Shadow Gray'
paint with painted Black racing stripes is in absolutely
exceptional condition, as it the whole car. The Black color bucket
seats interior is in great condition and the car boasts its
original factory AM radio! There are no signs of any rust or
accidents, obviously an always garaged and cherished driver, not an
abused older muscle car, before having been fully nuts and bolts
restored! This car must be seen and driven to be fully appreciated
- the engine is extremely strong and responsive with excellent oil
pressure and no oil leaks and which sounds absolutely magnificent,
the transmission shifts smoothly through the gears and the engine
temperature always remains cool. In summary, this is one very fine
example of this highly desirable and collectible muscle car a
beautifully custom restored 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 V8 2
Door hardtop with a big block 396 4 Barrel V8 engine example in
rare turn-key ready daily appreciating, daily driving and daily
head-turning condition! An all time classic American muscle car that
needs little or no introduction!
