In terms of pure visual recognition, nothing comes close to the
iconic Jeep brand. Before the Wrangler came along, the Jeep CJ
series was literally a civilian version (CJ stood for Civilian
Jeep) of the military variants, which meant it was a more driver-
and passenger-friendly version. First introduced in 1945 with the
Willys CJ-2A, this 1985 Jeep CJ7 4X4 383 Stroker represents the
second-to-last year for the hardcore CJ lineup. Decked out in this
ruggedly elegant tan camouflage paint, this CJ7 is equipped with
steel rail half doors, a front Oedro steel bumper with a lightbar,
overhead lightbar, and upgraded headlights to give it its own
aggressive and unique personality.
Inside, we find subtle upgrades to the CJ's typically Spartan
interior. An aftermarket center locking console separates a pair of
supportive Bestop vinyl bucket seats. A three-spoke,
power-assisted, flat-bottomed Grant steering wheel sits in your
hand comfortably, while an upgraded set of Revolution gauges,
featuring a large 90-mph speedometer, 6,000-rpm tachometer,
temperature, and fuel gauge, all contained inside the same bezel,
with a pair of auxiliary gauges keeping tabs on volts and oil
pressure offset to the passenger side. A Sony AM/FM/CD/AUX head
unit with Bluetooth connectivity powers a pair of large speakers
located under the dashboard.
Under the hood, we find a Blueprint Engines 383- cubic-inch Stroker
crate V-8 engine. Topped with lightweight aluminum heads, a
performance cam, four-barrel Holley carburetor, and Edelbrock
intake manifold, spent gases are expelled via shorty headers and a
FlowMaster dual exhaust. The result of all those go-fast parts is a
dyno-proven 425-horsepower. That massive power is routed through a
TH350 three-speed automatic transmission before heading out to the
Dana 44 rear axle and the Dana 30 front axle (if engaged), which
transfer those ponies to the pavement via a set of 15-inch black
steel wheels shod with big 31-inch all-terrain tires. Engaging the
front axle is accomplished by way of the manually locking front
hubs, and all four wheels are ready to tackle any terrain you can
throw at them.
