Formerly owned by Ed Welburn, the sixth head of design for General
Motors and the first person ever to lead GM design globally, this
2003 Chevrolet SSR pickup is powered by a 5.3-liter V-8 engine
producing a factory-rated 300hp paired with an automatic
transmission and rear-wheel drive. The engine is equipped with a
dual exhaust system. Stopping is handled by four-wheel anti-lock
disc brakes, and the vehicle is equipped with traction control. The
exterior is finished in Smokin' Asphalt Black and features a power
convertible hardtop and a cargo hard tonneau bed cover adorned with
a "44" decal. It rides on five-spoke aluminum wheels wrapped in
Goodyear Eagle performance tires. The interior features ebony
leather bucket seats and is equipped with air conditioning and
full-power accessories. During his 44-year career at GM, Welburn
was the driving force behind the development of many successful
designs with iconic nameplates, such as Corvette, Camaro and
Cadillac - as well as the Chevrolet SSR, or Super Sport Roadster,
which he followed from concept to production. This example was
Welburn's personal SSR. He walked down the assembly line as it was
being built, identified the truck's floor pan through assembly and
paint, fit the right rear quarter-panel in place and periodically
signed the vehicle as it was being built. This SSR eventually
became Welburn's official company car and he enjoyed it for close
to two decades. Included with the vehicle is a personalized binder
that includes photographs of Welburn watching his SSR being
assembled. 14,795 actual miles
