This 1995 Swift 010 IndyCar is a wildly unique fusion of authentic
open-wheel racing history and inventive modern engineering. Fully
restored and rebuilt, this former Indy competitor has been
transformed into a running, driving, and approximately 95%
street-legal machine, while still retaining the raw presence that
defined mid-1990s IndyCar racing. Unlike most retired Indy cars
that are wrapped for display, this example wears a properly painted
orange, white, and grey exterior, finished as car number 69, giving
it a permanent, high-quality presentation worthy of its
heritage.
Originally campaigned as the Panasonic-sponsored No. 22, this Swift
010 was driven in competition by Hiro Matsushita, a notable name
from the era. The car's visual impact remains unmistakable,
highlighted by its orange and white racing seat, exposed
suspension, and unmistakable IndyCar proportions. It presents
exactly as an Indy car should - low, aggressive, and mechanically
honest - yet now exists far beyond a static display.
Powering this car today is where the story becomes truly
extraordinary. The original racing drivetrain has been replaced
with a twin-turbocharged Honda Goldwing engine, delivering an
unexpected but remarkably compact and reliable powerplant well
suited for this chassis. Even more impressive is the
dual-transmission configuration: one transmission manages forward
and reverse selection, while a second, dedicated gearbox handles
gear changes. It's an unconventional solution - and undeniably
clever - allowing the car to function in real-world driving
conditions without compromising its race-car roots.
To support its road-use transformation, this Swift 010 has been
fitted with working headlights, taillights, turn signals, and road
lighting, making it approximately 95% street legal depending on
state requirements. The car runs, drives, and functions as
intended, requiring only a seatbelt or harness and a windshield to
meet full road-use compliance in many states.
This is not a replica, a mock-up, or a novelty build. It is a
genuine IndyCar chassis with documented racing history,
re-engineered into something that simply should not exist - yet
does. For the collector who already has everything, the enthusiast
who values engineering creativity as much as provenance, or the
buyer looking for the most unforgettable conversation piece
imaginable, this Swift 010 offers a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity.
