Still rocking its original engine and decked out in striking Saturn
Gold paint that's almost certainly been with it from the start,
this 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme is one fine looking classic
muscle car. Its surprisingly fresh look no doubt took a
considerable amount of consistent care, but the fact that this
cruiser has, from all outward signs, also logged an incredibly low
56,371 miles during its lengthy lifespan certainly helps. Not only
has that high-impact factory paint held up unusually well, but the
vinyl top, so often an Achilles' heel that's especially vulnerable
to both SUV exposure and the other elements, still presents nicely.
The body alignment on this vintage Olds is still consistent, as
well, with even gaps throughout and doors that open and close with
no issues.
Inside, even under close inspection you'll only find minimal wear
on the black vinyl surfaces of the seating, and both the front and
rear benches feel unusually pliable for their age. The overall
functionality inside these doors is beyond impressive. The factory
air conditioning blows strong and cold, although it should be
upgraded to modern refrigerant by its next owner. The gauges are
both functional and easily readable behind their clear lenses, and
all the buttons and control knobs on the dash are securely in
place. Even the original clock and AM radio both function as
intended. How rare is that?
Well over a half century after its years of service began, this
Cutlass remains a great running and driving classic. Fed by a
factory-correct Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor, it's
original 350-cubic-inch V8 fires right up and idles smoothly as it
sits in a nicely sorted compartment, crowned with an Oldsmobile
Rocket 350-branded air cleaner, still wearing its original intake
manifold and valve covers and surrounded by fresh hoses and
properly routed wiring. The accompanying three-speed automatic
TH350 shifts out nicely, with no slippage to make for a smooth
experience behind the wheel. Power steering makes this substantial
ride easy to navigate, while its power brakes that position discs
up front feel reassuringly solid.
