INTRODUCTION: One owner for the first 40 years (until 2007), this
heavily documented, numbers-matching genuine 4-4-2 is loaded with
desirable options, including factory air conditioning and Rally Pac
gauges. It is finished in a rare and highly attractive color
combination on a rust-free car. Sold new at Bill Romel Oldsmobile
in Redondo Beach, California, it comes with exceptional original
paperwork: Protect-O-Plate, sales contract, purchase order,
invoice, owner's manual, maintenance records, and documented
ownership history. The car spent most of its life in dry
climates-California, Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Texas.
EXTERIOR: A very impressive California body retaining all original
metal. It is straight throughout with excellent panel fit, clean
seams, and no rust or damage-door bottoms are solid and original.
In 2008 the car received a high-quality repaint in its original
Spanish Red, at a cost of over $15,000 (a significant investment at
the time, especially on a rust-free car). The finish is smooth,
glossy, and shows beautifully. Chrome and stainless trim are in
very nice condition. It features reproduction T-3 headlights and
rides on brand new BFGoodrich radial redline tires mounted on 15
inch SS1 chrome wheels. A bright white vinyl top provides striking
contrast and completes the classic muscle-era look.
INTERIOR: The interior is in excellent condition and presents very
well. The seats feature new red upholstery, complemented by new
door panels, headliner, and sun visors. The carpet is in excellent
shape and protected by new 4-4-2 floor mats. It retains its full
set of red GM seat belts. The center console is in good original
condition, and the dash area remains very well preserved. It is
equipped with the rare Rally Pack cluster, including tachometer,
gauges, and clock. The original AM radio plays clearly. Overall,
the interior is clean, tidy, and inviting.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: The engine bay has been restored and detailed
to factory-new appearance. It houses the original 400 cubic-inch
engine rated at 350 horsepower, presented in stock configuration
down to the manifolds, air cleaner, valve covers, and decals.
Factory features include power steering, power brakes, and air
conditioning. The A/C system has been rebuilt with new components
and updated to R134a refrigerant. As a California car, it retains
its original smog equipment fully installed.
Correct reproduction hoses, clamps, and wiring details have been
used throughout. It features spring-clamp battery cables with a
Delco battery topper. All metal surfaces are smooth and properly
finished, wiring is neatly routed, and components such as the hood
insulation, washer system, and radiator side seals are present and
correctly installed. The result is a complete, highly detailed
engine compartment.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: The trunk retains rock-solid original metal with
no rust, patches, or repairs. The underside of the trunk lid and
jambs are painted smooth gloss red, while the compartment itself is
neatly finished in correct spatter paint.
It includes a new two-piece rubber mat and matching tire cover,
along with a never-used fifth matching BFGoodrich tire for a spare.
The complete jack assembly is present. Wiring is in excellent
condition, the trunk light is functional, and the weatherstrip and
decals have been replaced.
UNDERSIDE: Extremely impressive underneath. The metal is
exceptionally clean-floor pans, braces, rockers, and lower inner
quarters show no rust or repairs. Even the chassis surfaces are
smooth, solid, and free of pitting. The underside has been cleaned
and neatly refinished in semi-gloss black. Equipped with the Rally
suspension package, it features boxed rear control arms and sway
bars. The front suspension appears fully rebuilt, including ball
joints, bushings, shocks, and steering components. The rear
suspension has also been rebuilt with new bushings and shocks. A
new factory-style exhaust system with correct crimped tailpipes is
installed. The fuel system has been replaced, including tank and
straps. It is equipped with rare front disc brakes; the system has
been rebuilt with new hoses, and the parking brake is fully
operational.
The bottom of the engine is spotless, with components such as the
starter appearing new. The original Turbo 400 automatic
transmission is clean and retains its original 1967 tag. The
original dated and coded 10-bolt rear end houses 3.08 cruising
gears.
CONCLUSION: This 4-4-2 is an absolute sweetheart and clearly a car
that has been well cared for throughout its life. With exceptional
documentation, a rust-free California body, desirable options, and
outstanding presentation, it represents a wonderful opportunity for
the next owner to acquire a truly special example.
