INTRODUCTION: Rotisserie restored, thoroughly detailed, and
expertly dialed in. This is a rare Formula S Barracuda powered by
the Super Commando 383 big block. Only 1,120 Barracudas were built
with the 383, and just 395 of those were fastbacks equipped with an
automatic transmission. The engine and transmission carry matching
numbers, and the original fender tag remains in place. Plymouth's
entry in the pony car wars, this Barracuda competed directly with
the Camaro and Mustang-but with unmistakable Mopar attitude.
EXTERIOR: The fastback roofline gives this car a sleek, aggressive
profile, and the execution is outstanding. The body is absolutely
laser straight with no signs of rust or damage. Panel fit is
exceptional, gaps are precise, and the doors close with a solid,
factory-fresh feel. Repainted in its original Ember Gold, the
finish is better than new with a deep, show-quality gloss that lays
out like glass. Signature Formula S details include chrome hood
inserts, pop-up gas cap, and correct fender emblems. Chrome is
mint, stainless trim is beautifully polished, and the grille and
tail panel present like new. Weatherstripping and seals have been
replaced, and a new windshield has been installed. It sits on
body-color steel wheels with poverty caps wrapped in new
reproduction redline tires, complemented by sporty side stripes
that complete the authentic muscle-era look.
INTERIOR: The interior presents like new. Premium Legendary
upholstery and door panels have been installed, delivering
factory-correct appearance with modern freshness. The dash area is
outstanding-gauges, knobs, trim, and dash pads all look pristine.
Originally a radio-delete car, it now features a discreet modern
stereo mounted below the dash. The original console between the
bucket seats is in excellent condition, and the rear seat folds
flat, creating the practical 2+2 layout unique to these fastbacks.
The deluxe steering wheel has been restored to like-new condition,
and the interior lighting is fully functional.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Under the hood is the original VIN-matching
Super Commando 383 (300 hp), professionally rebuilt with tasteful
performance upgrades. Enhancements include a hotter camshaft,
aluminum intake manifold, 750 Holley carburetor, electronic
ignition, and Jet-Hot-coated headers. The compartment is highly
detailed-every component looks fresh and properly installed. It
features a reproduction Mopar battery secured correctly, along with
the proper radiator, shroud, clamps, and hardware. The fender tag
remains attached and corresponds to the car. The inner fenders and
sheet metal are finished as nicely as the exterior, resulting in a
show-quality engine bay.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: The trunk area is equally well finished. The
underside of the lid, jambs, and interior surfaces are painted with
a smooth, glossy finish. Beneath the mat is a matching painted
wheel fitted with a redline tire. A new mat and weatherstrip have
been installed. The folding rear seat allows access from the trunk
into the cabin.
UNDERSIDE: The restoration included a full rotisserie process-every
component was removed, restored or replaced, and reinstalled. The
floors are pristine metal, properly prepped and painted in Ember
Gold. The Formula S ride-and-handling package has been fully
rebuilt, including suspension front and rear, upgraded with Koni
gas shocks at all four corners. The steering system has been
rebuilt, and the brake system is completely renewed, featuring
four-piston front disc brakes. The parking brake system is fully
functional. The fuel system-including tank and lines-has been
replaced. A stainless exhaust system with X-pipe is installed. The
underside of the engine is spotless, with components such as the
starter appearing new. The 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission
has been rebuilt and fitted with a shift kit and 2,500-rpm stall
converter. The driveshaft has been rebuilt with new U-joints. Out
back is the durable 8 rear end with 3.23 Sure Grip gears.
SERVICE: We performed a thorough inspection, and the car passed
with flying colors. Only minor rattles required
attention-otherwise, it proved to be well sorted and ready to
enjoy.
CONCLUSION: This Barracuda comes from a meticulous owner whose
vehicles are consistently maintained at showroom standards and
mechanically dialed in. It is an exceptional example-rare,
beautifully restored, and highly desirable. The next owner will be
acquiring one of the standout Formula S cars on the market and is
sure to be extremely pleased.
