"Getting to know a Corvette has got to be one of the great
pleasures in life. And anyone who truly loves the road and where it
goes deserves that pleasure at least once in his life. Or hers. The
same people who brought you your Corvette are still running the
store and keeping the faith. The '74 isn't a totally new Corvette,
just better. Take the styling. We wouldn't just change it for the
sake of change. But when we made the rear bumper stronger, we made
Corvette's entire rear styling look different. And, we think,
better." Corvettemuseum.org
For consignment, a 1974 Chevrolet Corvette convertible showing
102,069 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This is a three
owner, numbers matching example and one of just 5,474 convertibles
produced in 1974.
Exterior
A color change repaint in two stage Flame Orange ignites the
outside of this stingray and like a safety cone in the snow, it's
hard to miss! When the orange is coupled with a black canvas top
and four tires wrapping 15-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels, it's a fine
looking specimen! Those tires have an early 2021 date code, and
they present proudly with white letters out, old school style.
Rocker panel trim accentuates the center panels, including the long
door and its horizontal door handle while a subtle wing and fender
vents enhance the overall beauty of the profile. Imperfections are
few and include some rough surfaces where the fender meets the
rocker panel in front, some orange peel on the rear bumper, and a
couple of circular chips on the fender.
Interior
A woodgrain insert augments the black vinyl door panels that
include polished trim and a configuration that contours to the
shape of the car and provide an ergonomic fit at the same time.
Black leather bucket seats present in fantastic shape and a wide
view of the steering wheel and dashboard reveal a similar state of
condition, providing a one way ticket right back to 1974. Gauges,
faceplates, the center console, AM/FM radio, all appear without
flaw and barely signs of use. Black loop carpet is clean and
orderly, the underside of the canvas top spotless, and the cargo
area behind the seats, showroom fresh. The restoration of the
interior has paid off handsomely.
Drivetrain
Its time capsule status continues under the hood where the clean,
numbers matching 350 L82 V8 resides, topped by a 4-barrel
carburetor, finned valve covers, and an open air element. Behind
it, a numbers matching T10 4-speed manual transmission that routes
250 horsepower back to the rear axle and 3.70 gears with
Positraction.
Undercarriage
A new exhaust system starts us off underneath, dual pipes that
travel through stock style mufflers and short, steel tailpipes. The
brakes are new as well and it's power disc all around! Yes, new
suspension is on board as well and is made up of coil springs in
front, and Corvette's unique independent rear suspension is present
and capped off with transverse leaf springs. A touch of grease
sling is the only thing that detracts from a clean underside. No
harm there!
Drive-Ability
Pure analog goodness greets us as we enter the cockpit of this
American classic and fire up the 350. We shift the 1974
transmission into gear and roll this flame colored beauty onto the
test loop where it delivers good power, straight tracking, and
braking that's on point. We note the passenger door does not open
and the trip odometer is also not working but beyond those things,
all functions inside and out operate as they should. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
If you've got a gap in the 1974 slot of your Corvette collection,
or need a convertible to round things out, this is a very fine
example. Great paint, a spotless interior, and of course the
coveted numbers matching drivetrain make this a prime candidate for
the new collector or the seasoned curator of America's sports
car.
