For Sale: 1998 Chevrolet Camaro in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Coupe

"Everything else is just pretending. In recent years, the LT1 powered Z28 has taught the competition a thing or two about performance. For 1998, there's another lesson in store. The new LS1 Z28 has a totally returned suspension, an all new 4-wheel disc brake system with Bosch ABS and the highest horsepower engine in Z28 history." From the 1998 brochure.

For consignment, a 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 coupe with a title verified 84,836 actual miles. As the much touted factory suspension started to age, this car was bolstered with some aftermarket pieces sure to keep it pinned to the road.

Exterior
Move over Knight Rider, this F-body is steeped in more black than fresh asphalt and magnifies an aggressive profile with things like a VFN cowl hood, black rims, and smoked tail lights. There's a lot going on out back including a wing extension on the factory piece, a shorty antenna for cool aerodynamics, and gaping center exit exhaust tips. Up front, the angry hornet has crystal clear lenses, a dark, gaping intake, and a rising hood that has smooth edges rather than right angles. 17-inch glossy black ZR1 wheels darken the side and tires are no older than late 2020 while red calipers add a flash of color to this shadowy figure. Imperfections include rock chips on the side mirrors, some on the front, random scratches, and scuffs on the rear wing and rocker panel. Overall, the paint and body are very nice.

Interior
Dark gray plastics surround a cloth herringbone insert on the door panels, each clean and intact. That cloth pattern returns on the inserts of the bucket seats and as all cloth, there's naturally a touch of wear on the driver's side but the deep 2+2 in back and passenger seat are in very good condition. An ergonomic steering wheel tries its best to look cool, but the big 'ol air bag in the middle turns it softly pedestrian in the first year bags were mandated. Clean plastics surround the instrument cluster behind plexiglas and the center stack holds the big buttoned AM/FM/CD radio and three knob A/C panel. A big black ball handle tops the fun stick in the center console while a low pile gray carpet covers the floor. A formed headliner is covered in gray cloth and the deep storage in the back is finished in charcoal cloth lined panels, and each is clean, evidence that this car has been well cared for.

Drivetrain
Under that tall hood is the 5.7 liter LS1 V8, rated at 305 horsepower and adorned with an SLP air intake and electronic fuel injection. It's mated to the mighty Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission and power is routed to the 10 bolt rear axle with 3.42 gears and Positraction. A bright red strut brace bridges the bay and adds a touch of color to the mostly black powerplant.

Undercarriage
That red continues to the underside where UMI rear control arms and panhard bar liven things up visually while Viking coil overs tighten it down front and rear. Along with the three point subframe connectors, these parts contrast with the older components which have the typical surface rust and oxidation of a 28 year old car. Headers begin the exhaust process where a GMMP cat back system finishes underneath with chambered mufflers and dual oval tips. Power disc brakes are employed front and back.

Drive-Ability
The enhancements underneath really pay off on the drive, first with an exhaust note that is intoxicating, then with handling that rivals some of the best we've experienced, and of course, there's plenty of power underfoot and with the benefit of three pedals. Other than the reverse lights, all functions operate as they should and we slither this inky Z back to the mall where it can be viewed up close and personal. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

With its Darth Vader-like appearance, locked in suspension, and brilliant LS1 under the hood, there's not much NOT to like about this '98 Camaro. If you're looking for a fast and fast looking fourth gen Z28, this one is certainly worthy of close examination. If you want a car that has people in the fast lane moving right in a hurry, look deeply into the eyes of this car and then imagine yourself behind the wheel!
