When Porsche’s engineers were finally allocated the resources to develop the 911 after years of stagnation in the early 1980s, progress was swift. First came the 964 in 1989, which brought numerous performance and drivability updates the car had been lacking. Fast on its heels came the 993 in 1994 – a car that has since become renowned for its status as the final air-cooled 911. With dramatic exterior styling updates and a brand-new multi-link suspension, the 993-generation 911 fully brought the car into the modern era. A roomier interior and, for 1996, the introduction of VarioRam for extra horsepower, ensured the 993 exceeded the expectations of the company’s most dedicated clients.
Also for 1996 came the release of the 993 Targa. Unlike previous models which featured a removable roof panel, the company chose a more elegant solution: a power ‘panoramic’ glass sunroof that retracted behind the rear window. Unique rear quarter-window styling, the cabriolet’s ‘handlebar’ CHMSL brake light, and exclusive two-piece wheels are additional tells, making it easy to differentiate a Targa from standard coupes. While some enthusiasts mourned the loss of the fully removable panel and distinctive ‘roll hoop’ styling, this solution is far more convenient in day-to-day use. With only 4,583 reportedly produced worldwide before the release of the 996, 993 Targas are a rare entry into one of Porsche’s most well-regarded vehicles.
The magnificent 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa featured here is finished in classic and desirable gloss Black with an impeccably kept Classic Grey supple leather interior. This exceptional example has had only one meticulous owner from new and driven a mere 38,519 miles. This investment-grade example was ordered new with an extensive array of options and is presented in one of the most sought after color combinations for this particular model. Because of this, I personally believe the investment potential of this extremely rare, limited-production glass-roof Targa will grow beyond your imagination. Offered to the most demanding collector, investor, or enthusiast who desires to own one of the very best at an investment price!
