Introduced in May 1974 as the long-awaited successor to the
Volkswagen Beetle, the Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed Rabbit signaled
a decisive shift in engineering philosophy for the marque. The
Beetle's rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive, air-cooled layout was
replaced by the neatly packaged, front-engine, front-wheel-drive
hatchback with water cooling and a thoroughly modern design. The
Rabbit was immediately embraced for its practicality and improved
refinement. It was also praised for its light, eager character and
distinctly European driving manners.
By 1979, the platform expanded to include a Convertible. This
addition gave the Rabbit an open-air appeal and enhanced its
beloved charisma. For 1983, Volkswagen introduced the limited
Wolfsburg Edition, offered exclusively in "triple white"
specification with Alpine White paint, a White convertible top, and
a unique White interior. It was marketed as the only "summer whites
that will stay in style all year long."
Sold new by Jordan Volkswagen of Charlotte, North Carolina, this
Wolfsburg Edition Rabbit Convertible has remained in-state, as
shown on its clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report. It is powered by
a 1.7-liter "EN" inline-four with K-Jetronic fuel injection, paired
with a five-speed manual. In 2018, the Rabbit underwent extensive
mechanical work, including servicing its fuel, steering, brakes,
suspension, and cooling systems. Major replacements included the
timing belt, water pump, fuel tank, axles, and struts. The seats
were recovered in new white vinyl, and the replacement convertible
top retains its electrically heated glass rear window. A detailed
accounting of the work completed along with parts invoice and
original Volkswagen literature accompany the sale of this charming
sun-soaked and fun-loving Wolfsburg Edition Rabbit Convertible.
