Evolving from the Dino 206 GT, which had been developed to meet Formula Two regulations and to homologate the 2.0-liter V6 engine designed by Alfredo "Dino" Ferrari, the Ferrari Dino 246 GT was introduced at the 1969 Geneva International Motor Show. Marking the first collaboration between Enzo Ferrari and the Agnelli family of the Fiat empire, the 246 GT featured a longer wheelbase than its predecessor and was equipped with a larger 2.4-liter V6. Fed by three Weber twin-choke carburetors, the V6 featured twin overhead camshafts and breathed through larger-diameter dual exhausts, producing 195 horsepower, which was transmitted through a five-speed gearbox.

Unveiled at the 1972 Geneva International Motor Show, the GTS version, a Scaglietti-built Targa-style convertible, benefited from the evolutionary updates introduced on the GT and featured a black removable roof panel, with the rear quarter windows replaced by metal sail panels incorporating three air vents. Thanks to its mid-rear configuration, which allowed for ideal weight distribution, and a more streamlined front end, the Dino-originally conceived as a brand extension-quickly became a beloved sports car worthy of the Ferrari name. Its success was such that orders continued to pour in even after production came to an end in 1974.

Leaving the factory on 17 January 1973, and imported to the United States through Chinetti-Garthwaite Ferrari of Pennsylvania, this example was delivered new to its first owner, Dr. Jose Guzman of Kenton, Ohio, on May 31 of the same year, via the dealer European Motor Garage, finished in the distinctly 1970s color combination of Marrone Metallizzato over a Beige leather interior.

Built to U.S. specifications, this left-hand-drive Dino was equipped with the desirable and practical options of air conditioning and power windows, while retaining its standard Cromodora wheels, which suit the car particularly well.

The Massini Report records a succession of owners in Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky throughout the 1970s and '80s, with the well-known Terry Myr among them. By 1991 the car was in New York State, where it was maintained by Miller Motorcars of Greenwich, Connecticut. The car received attention prior to being offered for sale in Florida in 1995, returning once again to New York State in 1996, where it would remain with the same owner for twenty years. Mechanical work was later carried out by Classic Coach Repair in New Jersey before the car was sold again.

Under prior ownership, the car benefited from extensive servicing in 2021, including the installation of a new stainless steel exhaust system, Koni shock absorbers, suspension bushings, tires, a battery, and door and roof seals, in addition to a rebuild of the carburetors, electrical system repairs, and a recharge of the air-conditioning system, which had been converted to R134a refrigerant in 2009. Additionally, a replacement clutch was installed in 2016, and a Becker Mexico cassette stereo was rebuilt by Becker AutoSound of Saddle Brook, New Jersey, in 2012.

Enjoyed by its current owner since 2022, the car has since undergone a comprehensive cosmetic restoration, including a full repaint and a complete interior retrim, both executed in its original factory color scheme. The 14-inch Cromodora wheels, fitted with yellow Dino-branded center caps and shod with correct Michelin XWX tires and accompanied by a matching spare wheel, complete the iconic silhouette of this Dino 246 GTS.

Fully matching-numbers, this example bears Scaglietti body number 1615, chassis number 04568, engine stamping 0010576, and transaxle stamping 1685, all corresponding to the factory records according to the Massini Report. It is offered with its removable roof panel, toolkit, and jack, along with a three-piece set of fitted luggage, factory books and manuals, Massini Report, and a binder of invoices.

This matching-numbers Ferrari Dino 246 GTS is a beautifully authentic example with a well-known history, never having left the United States. Freshly restored in its striking original 1970s Marrone Metallizzato over Beige leather, it's primed for further enjoyment, proudly wearing a color combination now enjoying a stylish resurgence.
