The Austin-Healey 3000 closed out the saga of "Big Healey" models
that sat atop the Austin-Healey range of sports cars in the 1950s
and early 1960s. The 3000 MK I was introduced in July 1959 and
would be built at the British Motor Corporation (BMC)'s MG Works
plant in Abingdon, U.K. Under the Jensen Motors-crafted bodywork
was a new 2.9-liter BMC C-Series inline-six with twin SU HD6
carburetors, replacing the 2.6-liter powerplant in the preceding
Austin-Healey 100-6.
Sporting front disc brakes and a 2,550-pound curb weight, the
Austin-Healey 3000 quickly established itself as a formidable
weapon in rallying and endurance racing, with examples tackling the
24 Hours of Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring, and 12 Hours of Bathurst.
The original MK I was offered in both BT7 four-seater (2+2) and far
rarer BN7 open two-seater variants, with the latter offering the
prime British roadster experience that vintage touring enthusiasts
continue to chase.
The included British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate
records that this restored 1960 Austin-Healey 3000 MK I BN7 is
finished in its factory original colors of Black over a Red leather
interior and is complemented with a black soft top. When new, this
example was ordered with a healthy list of options including wire
wheels, overdrive, heater, laminated windshield, and adjustable
steering column. Tantalizingly, the car was additionally ordered
with an Ivory White hardtop, and while the top is no longer with
the roadster, it does offer its next owner the chance to complete
its stunning, original build specification. The Certificate further
records that this example was built 22 June 1960 and was delivered
new to Fort Worth, Texas. It was acquired by the consignor
approximately a decade ago and is furnished with a tonneau cover,
side curtains with cover, Thor knockoff hammer, and driver's
handbook.
As a rare BN7 open two-seater variant, this 1960 Austin-Healey 3000
MK I follows each of the tenets of the British roadster doctrine:
balanced, light, elegant, and deeply engaging. It is a compelling
companion for vintage tours and spirited weekend adventures,
forming driving memories that linger long after the garage door is
closed.
