This 1975 BMW 2002 is a standout example of the legendary "02
Series," offering a rare blend of documented history and a
significant mechanical refresh performed between 2022 and 2025.
This is an excellent Southern example that has remained extremely
straight and honest throughout its life. As a 3-owner car, its
story begins with a U.S. Department of Defense employee who took
delivery in Germany-the original DoD sticker is still proudly
displayed on the windshield. While the current owner has performed
an extensive list of services and upgrades to make this a reliable,
high-quality driver, please note that we do not have physical
service records or receipts for the work performed.
Exterior
The body on this 2002 is impressively straight and accurate. While
the paint shows its age with a slightly duller, period-correct
shine, it is very consistent and presents well throughout. The
silver finish highlights the iconic "boxy" lines and well-preserved
chrome brightwork. It sits perfectly on factory-style wheels with
period-correct reissue Pirelli Cinturato CN36 tires (new full-size
spare included). For those who appreciate history, the DoD
windshield sticker remains a fantastic conversation starter. The
structure is exactly what you want to see in a vintage BMW-solid,
dry, and clean.
Interior
The cabin features newly reupholstered front seats with a striking
teal and black houndstooth pattern that perfectly complements the
dark blue door panels. A beautiful Nardi steering wheel is
currently fitted, though the original is included. A dash cover has
been installed to preserve the upper surface. While the heater and
factory A/C (belt removed) are non-functional, the interior remains
a charming and comfortable place to be. Please note: The odometer
shows 02374 and is inaccurate, though the speedometer and
tripometer work. We are including a second speedometer dial
(showing 82,205) provided by a previous owner.
Underhood & Underbody
The mechanical refresh on this car is extensive. Work performed
during current ownership includes a rebuilt carburetor, adjusted
valves, and a refreshed fuel system with a new pump and lines. The
engine bay is notably tidy, showcasing an Ireland Engineering
Stainless Steel system with a ceramic-coated shorty header. The
cooling and charging systems were updated with a new water pump,
alternator, and hoses. Underneath, the steering and suspension were
revitalized with a rebuilt steering box, new center link, and tie
rods. Again, while this work is evident in the car's performance
and appearance, no physical receipts are available.
Driving
This BMW runs and drives exceptionally well. It feels safe,
planted, and tracks perfectly straight down the road. While the
choke can be a little finicky when cold, once the car is warmed up,
it settles into a nice, smooth, and quiet idle. The automatic
transmission shifts as it should, making this an effortless and fun
cruiser. Stopping is confident and straight thanks to the recent
brake work, including new rear drums and cylinders.
Conclusion
With a clean Illinois title in hand, this 1975 BMW 2002 is a rare
find. It combines a dry Southern pedigree with a massive amount of
recent mechanical attention. Included in the sale are the original
steering wheel, trunk liner boards, and the rare original BMW
first-aid pillow. It is a high-character survivor that drives even
better than it looks. Please note: We only have what is seen in the
photos and video, and we do not have paper service records for the
aforementioned work; we encourage you to watch our detailed video
to see the results of the refresh firsthand.
