GR Auto Gallery is excited to present this 1979 Ford Mustang Race
Car finished in black with a bold white racing stripe and classic
5.0 graphics down the side. As the first year of the Fox Body
platform, this Mustang represents the beginning of one of Ford's
most legendary performance eras. Originally a four eye Fox, this
car has been converted to the more aerodynamic 1989 front nose for
improved track performance, while the original four eye front clip
and grille are included for the next owner at their request.
Sitting low and purposeful on Ford Motorsport FR500 wheels wrapped
in Nitto NT01 tires, with a fiberglass hood, carbon fiber Tiger
Racing flared fenders, and an aluminum adjustable rear wing, this
Mustang looks every bit the serious competition car it is.
Under the hood is a strong 5.0L pushrod V8 built with performance
in mind. It features a mild Ford Motorsport cam, GT40 heads, Holley
Sniper 2 EFI, and MSD ignition, producing an estimated 350
horsepower. Power is sent through a T5 5 speed manual transmission,
keeping the driving experience raw and connected. The chassis has
been heavily upgraded with a 2003 Cobra independent rear
suspension, SLA front suspension, and Cobra four wheel disc brakes.
Koni single adjustable shocks and Eibach springs sit at all four
corners, while EPAS electronic power assist steering sharpens
response. A dual electric fan cooling system and new 130 amp
alternator help ensure reliability during hard sessions on
track.
Inside, the car is purpose built and all business. A full cage with
a swing up driver side bar allows easier entry and exit without
sacrificing rigidity. Lightweight door skins and aluminum hinges
reduce weight, while Kirkey racing seats for both driver and
passenger are equipped with recent harnesses. The aluminum dash
houses full gauges for monitoring vitals, and a quick disconnect
steering wheel adds both safety and convenience. Plexiglass
windshield and rear window further reduce weight, reinforcing this
Mustang's focused competition intent.
This Fox Body is not just built for show, it has real racing
pedigree. It competed in the World Challenge and American Iron
series and comes with its NASA log book. It claimed two wins in the
World Challenge series along with multiple podium finishes during
the 1995 and 1996 seasons. That kind of documented history adds
serious credibility and collectibility. For those wanting
versatility, the car retains functioning brake lights, and
headlights and turn signals could be made operational if a buyer
wished to pursue limited street use. This is a rare opportunity to
own a true first year Fox Body with legitimate race history and the
right upgrades to keep it competitive or simply enjoy as a piece of
modern American racing heritage.
