For Sale: 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1989 Mercury Grand Marquis GS Eagle Coach Hearse

"In 1980, the Lincoln Continental Mark VI joined the Panther party, with the Town Car an available trim level. Three years later, Ford shifted nameplates and platforms. The Continental, LTD, and Marquis nameplates all moved to the smaller, (and sportier), Fox platform that was shared with the Mustang. In their place, the Panther received the Ford LTD Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car. In 1985, the Town Car got a slight facelift, while the LTD Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis wouldn't get theirs until 1988." Motortrend, Sept. 2011

For consignment, a 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis GS Eagle Coach hearse with a title verified 63,285 actual miles. This car spent most of its life in the high desert region of Oregon which accounts for its rust free sheet metal.

Exterior
You can clearly see the Grand Marquis four door from which this hearse was converted in the profile of the vehicle and the distinctive rear section was added along with a landau bar as ornamentation for the big panel of dark blue vinyl. That blue contrasts with the two stage silver metallic paint on the body and the Marquis's rear fenders have been stretched well beyond the rear axle. 15-inch wheels now carry 215/70R15 tires with a late 2025 date code and narrow white walls. Up front, the boxy fascia is understated and elegant while the back is mostly consumed with the massive door flanked by modest tail lights. Imperfections include a missing piece of side molding, damage the front bumper filler panel, detached molding, a sizable scuff on the door along with chipped paint, missing trim on the vinyl top, some cracking of the vinyl itself, rear door alignment issue, and random chips and minor imperfections.

Interior
Standard Marquis interior up front means a luxury focused design, here with blue vinyl and plastic on the doors mixing with brushed aluminum, chrome, carpet, and simulated wood on robust and well appointed panels. The rear doors have the addition of pleated velour curtains and the removal of typical hardware replaced by button tufted panels. Driver and passenger are privy to broad blue velour bucket seats while the dashboard is elegantly presented with simulated wood, square gauges in aluminum backing, and a tilt steering wheel, all in great shape. An XM radio unit is added to the existing AM/FM which resides just above the climate panel. A sliding partition allows views to the rear area which is fully fitted with the requisite rollers and sliders within a flat, wooden floor and elegant ornamentation on the sidewalls.

Drivetrain
Under the rather tattered insulator pad is the venerable 5.0 liter V8, here rated at 150 horsepower, fuel injected, and mated to an AOD 4-speed automatic transmission. Power is routed to the Ford 8.8" rear with 3.08 gears.

Undercarriage
Other than some surface rust, typical metal oxidation, and some residual oil film, the underside is clean and solid. Dual exhaust flows through stock style mufflers and terminates out of sight behind the fenders. Power brakes are configured as front disc and rear drum and suspension entails coil springs at both ends with a 4 link in back.

Drive-Ability
This will not be our final ride, at least, for now, as we roll the 5 liter onto the test loop where the rig cruises from point to point and builds speed slowly and typically, hearses are in no rush so no complaints here. Visibility is not an issue as this car would be in a procession but for typical use, curtain up in back is best. Other than the reverse lights which are embedded on the rear bumper, and the factory radio not working, all other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

We know there's an audience for hearses, having represented quite a few over the years. They are considered professional cars and there's quite a passionate group who likes to preserve these important cars. There are others that will modify hearses and dress them up for shows. Whatever camp you're in, this Grand Marquis represents a very nice and solid example with relative low mileage and a clean interior.
