"The Allis-Chalmers Company was a major manufacturer of farming and
industrial equipment in the United States for most of the Twentieth
Century. Allis-Chalmers was headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
with a major tractor factory in nearby West Allis, (a town named
for the company). Financial difficulties led to dissolution in
1985. The farm equipment operations were sold to
Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz of Germany. Tractor production continued
under the Deutz-Allis name until 1989, when management purchased
the company to form AGCO." Tractordata.com
For consignment, a 1949 Allis-Chalmers Model G tractor with unknown
mileage, however our consignor states there are just five hours on
the rebuilt Continental engine.
Exterior
Persian Orange was the distinctive color for Allis-Chalmers line of
vehicles, and it covers everything from the tubular frame to the
wheels to steering shaft and engine components. Even the metal seat
is bathed in orange and it's all in excellent condition as this
unit now serves as a show worthy relic. The Allis-Chalmers decals
on the sides are crisp and fresh. Up close, the surfaces hint at
some former use with metal pitting that's been smoothed by layers
of orange paint, but still visible in spots.
Functionality
A steering wheel unique to the G models presents like a circle, a
pie with some slices removed, but fully functional and simple. The
metal saddle sits ahead of the gas tank while a foot pedal and
levers are easily accessible. The 12-inch front wheels
characteristically dwarf in comparison the rears which are 30-inch
and the tires show functional differences as well. There is a
single headlight in front attached to the steering shaft support
and a single tail light in back.
Drivetrain
The tractor is equipped with a rebuilt 62ci four cylinder, bored
.020 over and putting out 10 horsepower with a 1-barrel carburetor.
It is connected to a 3-speed manual transmission with creeper gear
and 6.71 rear axle ratio. Mechanical drums are employed on the rear
wheels and rigid suspension is at both ends. The single short
exhaust and manifold are the only metal parts in the engine not
painted orange.
If you're a suburbanite, you might not be aware of the vast world
of tractor collecting and restoration that exists in the United
States and elsewhere. Visit any county fair in semi rural areas and
you'll soon learn that the variety and detail of tractors is not
only as high as an elephant's eye but also full of important
historic context. This Allis-Chalmers example was restored about 20
years ago and serves as a three dimensional history lesson. It
starts and runs and will come to the new owner with some farming
implements including a cultivator.
