Bavarian Econs, founded in 2020 by Munich-based brothers Edgar and
Nicolas Navarro, has been leading the charge to "futureproof" the
iconic BMW 2002 platform. The genesis of Bavarian Econs' builds
started with the example offered here, originally a 1972 2002tii
"Roundie" finished in Golf Yellow over a Black leather and Corduroy
interior. It is powered by a 120 kWh Small Front Drive Unit from a
Tesla Model S mounted to the rear wheels, combined with a BMW i3 33
kWh battery pack and 400-volt electrical system. This gives the
Bavarian Econs 2002te a sizable and instantly-accessible boost to
250 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to sprint from
zero to 60 mph in a reported 5.2 seconds-almost four seconds
quicker than stock! The 2002te is also equipped with a KW V3
Classic coil over suspension with Powerflex suspension bushings,
plus refreshed E10 front disc and rear drum brakes.
Bavarian Econs elected to preserve the specification of their
low-mileage donor car, leaving the paint in its original condition
except for the hood, trunk, and passenger-side rear fender-which
was subtly repainted to accommodate the charging port concealed
behind a mock fuel cap. Other cleverly hidden upgrades include
custom 2002-style gauges that show battery information and a hidden
Bluetooth stereo and subwoofer under the dash that connect to eight
Helix speakers. Further appointments include vintage-style
fixed-back sports seats, air conditioning, and a Momo Prototipo
steering wheel. Hella driving lights and 13-inch Alpina wheels shod
in Michelin XDX-B radial tires complete the 2002te's
period-appropriate enhancements.
Complying with rigid German TV inspection standards, Bavarian
Econs put a prototype version of the 2002te (this example's
predecessor) through thousands of vigorous test and development
miles, refining the car on the Autobahn as well as on some of
Germany's most exciting Alpine roads. They maintain that the 2002te
is compatible with any standard home 50-amp charging outlet or
public charging station and can charge to 80-percent of its
124-mile range in 45 minutes, making it usable as both a classic
daily driver or emissions-free Sunday driver.
The 2002te offered here was both Bavarian Econs' first complete
production build and the car that would represent the 2002te on a
global scale, acting as the official press car to promote the
Navarro brothers' thoughtful EV conversions. This example was the
subject of several features from renowned publications including
Hagerty, Mototrend, Top Gear, and Motortopia. It was further
showcased during Monterey Car Week at the 2023 Legends of the
Autobahn and The Quail 2024; mingling with some of the world's
finest vintage and modern automobiles.
Purchased by the consignor in 2024 after multiple years of press
features and prestigious automotive events, this 2002te is now
offered with a clean Montana title and just 1,512 miles covered
since its electric transformation. It is furnished with a J+
Booster portable EV charger, tools, German registration documents,
original owner's manuals, service booklet, and a collection of
articles about the car.
This 1972 BMW 2002te delivers the charm and tactility of the
original 2002 with the immediacy, reliability, and usability of
modern electric power; executed with such clever discretion that
its advanced technology is virtually invisible. As Bavarian Econs'
first and most globally showcased build, it is a standout example
of the restomod movement and the definitive expression of a
thoughtfully modernized 2002.
