The Ferrari Testarossa carries one of the most revered names in
motorsport-Testa Rossa Italian for Red Head, honoring the
distinctive red camshaft covers of Ferrari's 250 TR sports racing
machines. When whispers of a "new Boxer" bearing this badge emerged
from Maranello, the automotive world watched with anticipation.
The new Testarossa retained its Boxer predecessor's mid-mounted
5.0-liter 12-cylinder engine with horsepower now boosted to 385
courtesy of four-valve heads. Despite the power increase,
smoothness and drivability was improved, with a maximum speed of
180 mph. The Pininfarina-designed side strakes, which fed air to
the side-mounted radiators, became one of the most instantly
recognizable styling cues of the decade. Wider and longer than the
512 BBi, its increased dimensions accommodated wider tires a larger
passenger compartment all while weighing less than the Boxer thanks
to its use of aluminum body panels.
This exceptionally original European-market Testarossa was
completed in evocative Giallo Ferrari (Yellow) over a Nero (Black)
leather interior, and according to its Ferrari Classiche "Red
Book," was delivered to Damagaard Nielsen Copenhagen in Denmark in
March 1991. A temporary Danish registration on file shows that the
car was registered on 15 March 1991 to a Mr. Erik Larsen of
Gentofte, Denmark. The car was later relocated to Germany, and it
remained on its original Danish MSO for the entirety of its life
before being issued a Georgia state title in preparation for the
sale.
Invoices on file reveal that by the late 2010s, the Ferrari was
located in the U.K., where it underwent comprehensive servicing by
marque specialist Joe Macari. Work included a major engine-out
service replacing the cam belts, tensioner bearings, and auxiliary
belts, along with new cam cover gaskets, cam seals, and O-rings.
Additional work comprised replacing all four tires, brake hoses,
brake caliper seals, inner and outer wheel bearings, new fuel
pumps, a new A/C compressor, and more. The work, completed in
August 2018, totaled £23,568.55 with VAT, and was carried out at
2,732 kilometers-meaning the car has traveled just over 100
kilometers since this major service.
Imported to the United States in May 2023, this European-market
Testarossa now displays just 2,833 kilometers at cataloging and is
Ferrari Classiche certified, confirming the retention of its
original engine and transaxle. It presents in exceptional
time-capsule condition, making it an ideal preservation class
entrant in concours or Ferrari Club of America events. Wherever it
is displayed, this Testarossa will serve as a benchmark for the
model and a crowning addition to any collection of low-mileage
Ferraris.
