The reintroduction of the Maybach nameplate in 2002 was announced
with theatrical grandeur. Transported across the Atlantic aboard
the Queen Elizabeth II, encased in glass on the first-class sun
deck, the new Maybach arrived in New York before descending
delicately by helicopter-an entrance befitting the brand's lofty
ambitions. Upon debut, Maybach not only elevated contemporary
standards of luxury but also reasserted the legacy of its legendary
motorcars of the 1920s and '30s. The Maybach 62, named for its
imposing 6.2-meter length, was described as "a world of
superlatives," featuring up to 210 individual leather components,
over 100 hand-fitted trim pieces, and a bespoke twin-turbocharged
5.5-liter V12 producing 543 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque.
An exceptionally costly car throughout its years on offer, the base
cost for a 62 had grown to $411,750 by 2009. At that level, many of
the standard features aboard the Maybach 62 were unobtainable from
other elite luxury car manufacturers. With reclining rear seats
with leg and footrests, integral seats with massage function, rear
folding tables, Keyless-Go, power closing doors and trunk lid,
electronically controlled Airmatic air suspension with four-wheel
level control, the long wheelbase 62 became the luxury standard
bearer.
Of course, every Maybach 62 is a highly customized automobile, and
this particular example, finished in Caspian Black over a Vesuvius
Black Maybach "Grand Nappa" leather interior, features a number of
noteworthy extras when new that included the Panoramic Glass
Sunroof, a Partition Wall with Clear Glass and Curtain, Front and
Rear Seat Climate Control, Rear Axle Steering with Large Steering
Angle and the exquisite choice of "Wood Burred" Walnut Trim among
other additional cost options. A refrigerator resides between the
rear seats to chill the beverage of choice for the fortunate rear
occupants chauffeured in seats resembling those in the first-class
cabin of an intercontinental airliner.
This highly desirable long wheelbase 62 model benefits from light
use and regular recent servicing. The clean CARFAX Vehicle History
Report records less than 9,000 miles on the odometer at cataloging,
and servicing at both Manhattan Motor Cars and Mercedes-Benz of
Goldens Bridge. In 2022, upon acquisition by the consignor, the
specialists at Goldens Bridge conducted a thorough inspection and,
over a five-page invoice, conducted repairs to the Telematics
system, performed an A Service new fluids and filters, and
refinished all four wheels in gloss black. Additional work in 2024
included a new battery, fresh engine oil, TPM sensors, and valve
stems. In 2025 repairs were made to the passenger rear door closing
assist and air conditioning system.
With only 66 Maybachs sold in the United States for 2009-and far
fewer representing the highly desirable long-wheelbase 62-this
super-luxury sedan is as rare as it is impressive, embodying
Wilhelm Maybach's famous dictum: "To create the very best from the
very best."
