Early versions of Volkswagen's Type 1 Sedan, affectionately known
as the Beetle, were well known for many things, yet its practical
engineering and a plucky attitude won the hearts of many the world
over. The 1950s were good to VW, a company that rose from the ashes
of post-war Germany to global acclaim, earning a reputation for
offering the world's best-selling car. Designed and engineered by
Ferdinand Porsche, it was powered by an economic air-cooled
flat-four engine and featured sensible engineering, torsion-bar
suspension, and a sturdy yet elegant design. At the same time, the
Beetle gained a loveable reputation leading to many to treat the
Beetle as an extension of the family with performance parts and
accessories to rival any domestic luxury offering.
The included Volkswagen Zertifikat indicates that this U.S.-market
example was manufactured on 2 November 1954 and delivered new via
renowned Volkswagen importer Riviera Motors in San Francisco.
Ordered with the desirable sliding three-fold canvas sunroof and
originally sporting a Red leatherette interior, it is likely this
example was originally finished in Nile Beige or Black.
As part of a body-off rotisserie restoration, this "oval window"
was refinished in its period correct shade of Diamond Green over a
tan interior with white seat piping. Upgrades include a 12-volt
electrical system and a 1,641-cc flat-four engine from the early
1970s. The engine bay exhibits all the signs of a high-quality
rebuild-proudly displaying its clean magnesium case and plated
hardware in an exceptionally neat presentation. Upon inspection,
this Beetle additionally carries an additional stamped serial
number (119765129) between the rear seats from a 1969 Beetle
suggesting that certain elements the body or chassis were replaced
during the extensive restoration; not an uncommon practice for a 70
year old car-especially one where parts interchangeability was so
widely and memorably touted in the era!
Beautifully restored, tastefully upgraded, and equipped with the
seldom-seen three-fold sliding ragtop, this 1955 Volkswagen Beetle
De Luxe Sedan offers a superb blend of period charm and enhanced
drivability. Its careful presentation and thoughtful mechanical
improvements make it an appealing choice for collectors seeking a
standout early Beetle ready for shows, touring, and memorable
weekend enjoyment.
