The Ghibli SS remains one of Maserati's finest front-engine grand
tourers-fast, refined, comfortable, and stylish. Debuting in 1969
as a performance upgrade to the sleek, Giorgetto Giugiaro-penned
Ghibli, the Ghibli SS featured a 4.9-liter V8 with larger Weber
carburetors and a new crankshaft, improving output to 330
horsepower and significantly boosting torque to 354 lb-ft. The
Ghibli SS boasted an impressive 174 mph top speed, making it the
fastest and also the most luxurious Maserati road car built at the
time.
This 1971 Maserati Ghibli SS Coupe is finished from the factory in
Rosso Fuoco over a Nero Connolly leather interior with red
carpeting. It was originally specified with the desirable
five-speed manual transmission, Ruote Borrani wire wheels, power
steering, and a Becker Europa radio as confirmed by its original
build sheet. Factory documentation shows that this example was
completed in March 1971 and was delivered new to Grossman Motor Car
Corporation in New York that September. It is thought to have
remained stateside until it was registered in Italy in 2013, where
it immediately underwent a comprehensive bare metal restoration.
All of its major systems were overhauled-including its engine,
transmission, differential, steering system, brakes, suspension,
interior, and air conditioning.
Italian classic car experts G.P.S. Classics were commissioned by
the Florida-based consignor in 2020 to inspect this elegant Ghibli,
located in Polverigi, Italy at the time. Their meticulous survey
confirmed the restoration's high quality and recommended further
refinement work to bring the Ghibli even closer to its original
factory-correct specification. G.P.S. finished the body in its
original shade of Rosso Fuoco, serviced the air conditioning
system, refreshed the electrical system, and fitted restored
Borrani RW4198 15x7 wheels with new Michelin XWX radial tires and
ANSA exhaust. The car returned to the United States in November
2020, entering a distinguished collection of fellow
concours-quality classic cars for the past five years.
This 1971 Maserati Ghibli SS is offered with its original build and
road test sheets, Italian road registration, and a Maserati
Certificate of Authenticity issued September 2016 confirming its
numbers-matching engine and original color combination. One of just
425 Ghibli SS Coupes, this example stands out for its meticulous
restoration and careful return to factory-correct specification,
offering a rare opportunity to acquire one of Maserati's most
celebrated grand tourers in its most authentic form.
