Constructed as part of the initial wave of dual-use car-based
pickup trucks, the Chevrolet El Camino and its arch-rival, the Ford
Ranchero, pioneered new ground for America's two leading
automakers. As is well known, it was the El Camino that dominated
and became synonymous with the segment. Yet, because of its
do-it-all utilitarian nature, few survive today, and even fewer
exhibit rare factory options and the unique color combination this
example from The Bill & Patti Spurling Collection possesses.
This first-generation El Camino wears its as-born color scheme of
two-tone Cascade Green and Jade Green, smartly matched inside with
a two-tone, green-upholstered interior with black, white, and green
houndstooth seat inserts. Its extensive suite of factory options
includes air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power
windows, power seat, an overhead compass, a Wonderbar radio, cruise
control, and more. Perhaps most importantly, this El Camino carries
the model designation "1280," the highly desirable code denoting V8
power with two 283 cu-in and five large 348 cu-in variants among
them. The V8 engine serial suffix "G" indicates it is fitted with a
348 cu-in 250-horsepower variant specific to the two-speed
Powerglide transmission with a single four-barrel Carter carburetor
producing an impressive 300 lb-ft of torque.
In 2003, the V8-powered El Camino was acquired by well-known and
passionate collector William "Tom" Gerrard, who saw the
significance of the car and commissioned a full and comprehensive
restoration by Harbor Auto Restoration of Rockledge, Florida. Upon
completion in late 2004, Gerrard and the El Camino went on to a
decade of high-level concours success. The early years were focused
on touring the country in AACA competition, racking up AACA Junior
and Senior National wins along with Grand National First Prizes
including "Best Senior Truck at a National Meet" in 2005. This was
followed by Vintage Chevrolet Club of America (VCCA) Junior Awards
culminating in two VCCA National First Place Senior Awards in 2011
and 2016 with 994 out of 1000 points scored at their National Meet
at Lake Tahoe. It proudly wears multiple AACA and VCCA awards on
its front grille as a testament to the high quality of its
restoration.
Later, this rare El Camino joined the Carmel, California-based
collection of Jackie and Gary Runyon, noted for its devotion to the
best of General Motors' mid-century American classics. In 2022, it
joined The Bill & Patti Spurling Collection, where it has been
prized for its rarity, uncommon color combination, V8 power, and
exacting restoration. Opportunities to acquire a fully restored,
award-winning first-generation El Camino like this are
exceptionally rare, making it a must-have for serious
collectors.
