By 1962, the Corvette had evolved through nearly a decade of
refinements to become the most developed and final iteration of the
original C1 generation. While Chevrolet was preparing to launch the
second-generation C2 the following year, they continued improving
the outgoing model right up to the end.
The 1962 model introduced several visual updates including
body-color side coves that flowed seamlessly into the bodywork and
the removal of polished stainless steel trim borders. The biggest
news for 1962 was found under the hood with the introduction of the
larger 327 cu-in V8 engine with outputs ranging from 250 hp to 360
hp. Chevrolet saved the best for last with the 1962 "Fuelie." Of
the 14,531 Corvettes produced for 1962, just 1,918 were ordered
with the most potent available power plant, the 327 cu-in, 360-hp
V8 carrying the RPO option code 582. It was little wonder, as
checking the box for RPO 582 added $484.20 to the bottom line-quite
a sum in 1962. Equipped as such, the 1962 Corvette was a genuine
performance machine capable of 140 mph.
This striking example of the final and fully evolved 1962
model-year Corvette is presented in RPO 582 fuel-injected
configuration, mated to an optional four-speed manual transmission
and a limited-slip differential with a 4.11:1 ratio. After years of
ownership in Southern California, the Corvette underwent a
comprehensive two-year, frame-off restoration initiated in 1998.
Finished in the early 2000s, the car received multiple awards
including a Bloomington Gold Certificate in 2001 and was later
invited to be shown at the 2002 Bloomington Gold Special Collection
"Corvette Evolution" 50th anniversary event held at the Pheasant
Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois. The bodywork is finished in
Sateen Silver, paired with a Red interior and a black pinpoint soft
top. Remaining in beautifully restored condition, the car is also
joined by a matching Sateen Silver hardtop, a Wonderbar radio, an
off-road exhaust, spinner hubcaps, and Firestone whitewall
tires.
Featuring the highest output available for any C1 Corvette mated to
the most desirable four-speed manual transmission, this 1962
Corvette is a thrill to drive and would be right at home on
high-speed rallies such as the Copperstate 1000. Well maintained
since its restoration, this end-of-the-run '62 Fuelie is pure
Americana in a very powerful package.
