The 1953 Cadillac Eldorado was far more than a special edition-it
was a true dream car, its Harley Earl styling drawn almost directly
from the Motorama show car that had originally captivated the
public, and one of the three most exclusive models from General
Motors' prestigious "Triple Crown." Costing twice the price of a
Coupe de Ville, each of the 532 examples was hand-built at a
dedicated facility and featured a lowered convertible body,
dramatic cut-down doors, a fully disappearing top under the
integrated boot, and the first wrap-around windshield and visored
dashboard ever fitted to an American production car. Inside, the
Eldorado continued its bespoke character with lowered seats,
embossed stainless door trim, unique sun visors, and sliding
interior door handles reminiscent of Cadillac's Motorama show
cars.
According to a digital copy of its Cadillac build sheet, this 1953
Eldorado is offered as it left the factory in Eldorado-exclusive
Aztec Red with Red leather interior and Black Orlon powered folding
soft top. Already factory-equipped with all of Cadillac's finest
amenities, this example was additionally optioned with the E-Z-Eye
Glass and Firestone tires. It retains its numbers-matching 331
cu-in 210-horsepower V8 that is paired with a proven four-speed
Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. The Eldorado's original
identification plaque shows that this example was delivered new in
June 1953 to G.F. Howard in Canfield, Ohio.
Prior to current ownership, this rare sporting Cadillac was sourced
from the West Coast and purchased by the proprietor of Pipe Dreams
Auto Restoration in Sacramento, California. Starting with a solid,
rust-free car thanks to its dry-climate preservation, the decision
was made to perform a no-expense-spared, ground-up restoration that
spanned from 2009 to 2012. The three-year project represented a
comprehensive revitalization-mechanical, cosmetic, and
electrical-culminating in a level of finish consistent with
top-tier concours work. From its numbers-matching engine and chrome
to its interior and unique Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels,
virtually every component was rebuilt, refinished, or replaced to
as-new condition.
This numbers-matching Eldorado is offered with its original owner's
manual, folding top instructions, Cadillac shop manual, and an
extensive restoration with invoices on file and available to
review. Having spent several years on the West Coast in a dry
climate, this is a solid example whose stunning restoration quality
remains apparent today.
Correctly restored to the highest standards and loaded with
originality, this is a rare chance to acquire the most attractive
and sporting '50s Cadillac in standout condition. It's a
collectible showpiece ready to elevate any collection and would be
a welcome entry to any Cadillac & LaSalle Club event.
